The Arctic Oscillation Index is still negative and forecast to stay that was another week or so, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we still saw a small uptick in sea ice extent, but once the index goes positive, sea ice will disappear quite quickly.
Robert Fanney Replying to @EricHolthaus: “Arctic to Cool as Antarctica Heats Up”. It’ll be fascinating to watch “Antarctica Heats Up” over 3 weeks considering its thermal inertia and the circumpolar currents. How many degrees ? Mike McLennan Replying to @EricHolthaus” “20,000” 20,000 km**2 is 1/4 the diameter of the dot that ends the 2018 plot.
2019 was the second lowest on record behind 2018—-Greenland ice is doing some strange and unprecedented things. Google “arctic sea ice” and “Greenland ice melt” and you’ll find tons of info.

2018 will be the fourth record low in a row then. Below the trend from 1979 to 2017:

In the same period, Arctic sea ice volume has halved:

It’s two years further along, and I’m wondering what the current situation is….

Thanks! 🙂
