If you’re willing to betray your own grandchildren, well then…..

Sioux City (Iowa) Journal:

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — As national co-chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, Northwest Iowa’s Sam Clovis encouraged a low-level foreign policy adviser to meet with Russian officials to build relations with the Kremlin, according to media reports Monday.

“Make the trip, if it is feasible,” Clovis wrote in an August 2016 email to George Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos, 30, a former researcher at the conservative Hudson Institute, was thrust Monday into the center of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign. Papadopoulos, who was secretly arrested in July for lying to federal authorities, has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with Mueller’s investigation, according to court papers unsealed Monday.

The Hill:

This fall, the Senate will likely take up the president’s nominee to head the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) research portfolio, Sam Clovis. After flirting with other candidates, Clovis swung to the Trump camp before the Iowa caucuses. His early onboard status vaulted him up the ranks of the campaign, clinching an offer to join the administration — a post for which he is manifestly unqualified.

The law requires candidates for the position to possess “specialized training or significant experience in agricultural research, education, and economics,” none of which are on Clovis’s resume.

His inability to respect scientific findings matches his nonexistent credentials. Clovis is a climate change ostrich. “A lot of the science is junk science,” he said in rejecting the most ominous threat facing the farmers who populate the groups supporting him, themselves betraying the farm lobby’s longtime allegiance to science-based policymaking.

Before joining the Trump campaign, Clovis’s blog posts and radio talk show commentary were laced with misogyny, anti-gay bias and racism. He attacked Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Hillary Clinton and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, as well as several female Obama administration officials. Homosexuality is an aberration, Clovis claimed. He stoked birtherism, accusing President Obama of fabricating his biography, and called Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary Tom Perez racist bigots.

UPDATE: Seems likely that Clovis will get thrown under the bus. We’ll see who he grabs on the way down.

Washington Post:

Emails previously described to The Post indicate that the “high-ranking campaign official” described in court documents is onetime campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. The emails were among more than 20,000 pages that the Trump campaign turned over to congressional committees after review by White House and defense lawyers.

Lewandowski, who was pushed out of his post in June 2016, did not respond to requests for comment.

Papadopoulos wrote to Lewandowski several times to let him know that the Russians were interested in forging a relationship with the campaign, court filings show.

In one email on April 27, 2016, Papadopoulos wrote “to discuss Russia’s interest in hosting Mr. Trump.”

“Have been receiving a lot of calls over the last month about Putin wanting to host him and the team when the time is right,” he added.

In May, Papadopoulos forwarded to Lewandowski an offer of “cooperation” from a Russian with links to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Is this something we want to move forward with?” he asked.

There is no indication if or how Lewandowski responded to those messages. But in June, when Papadopoulos emailed him again about Russia, Lewandowski referred him to Clovis because he “is running point,” according to court documents.
