Cat’s Out of the Bag. BEST Team (re)Confirms Human Caused Warming. Duh.

A freakin’ genius, this one.

Reason:

Richard Muller, the head of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project, will publish an op/ed next week in the New York Times summarizing his group’s findings with regard to global temperature trends. From a copy of the op/ed, Converted Skeptic, circulating on the web:

CALL me a converted skeptic. Three years ago I identified scientific issues that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Now, after organizing an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I’ve concluded that global warming is real, that the prior estimates of the rate were correct, and that cause is human.

My turnaround is the result of the careful and objective analysis by the “Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature” team, founded by me and my daughter Elizabeth. Our results show that the average temperature of the Earth’s land has risen by two and a half degrees Fahrenheit over the past 250 years, and one and a half degrees Fahrenheit over the most recent 50 years. Moreover, it appears likely that essentially all of this increase is due to the human emission of greenhouse gases.

Muller goes on to say how his analysis isn’t like that old IPCC analysis, it’s better, because it’s got the secret ingredient doctors recommend.

Or something.

Meanwhile, nothing in there about apologizing to the scientists he slurred and slandered in order to build up the visibility of his project. Thanks Richard. We now know what we knew 25 years ago.

UPDATE: From Mike Mann’s Facebook page-

Muller’s announcement last year that the Earth is indeed warming brought him up to date w/ where the scientific community was in the the 1980s. His announcement this week that the warming can only be explained by human influences, brings him up to date with where the science was in the mid 1990s. At this rate, Muller should be caught up to the current state of climate science within a matter of a few years!

  1. I doubt Watts is ready to throw the towel on the issue of AGW- Does anyone really think Watts- funded in large part by Heartland Institute is going to say Hansen, Mann and others where right?

The web of lies and denial are beginning to wear thin for Watts and others. They will doggedly go on for several years to come- but as more extreme weather continues- and the data shows further warming, their voices will become smaller.

    1. Looks like he’s chosen to fight back with the same old Surface Stations canard:

PRESS RELEASE – U.S. Temperature trends show a spurious doubling due to NOAA station siting problems and post measurement adjustments.

  2. I wonder if Watts’ big announcement will be that he is cancelling his surface stations project (photographing air conditioners near thermometers etc) because he finally accepts that his “anomalies” are no explanation at all for the observed warming that he now accepts is really happening?

    1. He has had three independent studies from researchers and the code available to do the calculations (drop out bad stations) on the freely available temperature record. There is no standard of evidence or rational explanation that will sway someone like this. It requires an emotional or instinctual change in brain patterns that changes the way climate change implications are viewed in his mind. Once he breaks the association between climate change mitigation and instant political/economic doom, then he will get somewhere close to where the established science resides.

        1. Yep, and it looks like the announcement has been made. A new paper by Anthony, his partner, McIntyre, Christy, and looks like a few others not mentioned yet.

It is just a draft, and he already made a press release before contacting a journal (or at least it sounds that way). He was on Dr. Muller’s case for doing the same thing not very long ago. It seems he has short term memory (or short term morality).

          1. It’s not a paper…yet. I suppose Energy and Environment will run with it. What annoys me is the sycophantic tendencies of his supporters. He could tell them all to go to hell and they’d comment about how wonderful he is. It’s sad. I don’t mean to do blatant self promotion but I’ve found a couple of doozies that highlight the mentality….plus I’m rather proud of the picture I made. http://uknowispeaksense.wordpress.com/2012/07/30/denier-comment-of-the-day-july-30-2012/

    2. Not only is it ground breaking science but in the Figures and Tables there is also a photo of a thermometer enclosure with arrows pointing to peeling paint (figure 9)….proof at last!

Once a weatherman always a weatherman…talk about amateur hour
