Above, new estimates of ice cap melt in Greenland and Antarctica have implications for Sea Level Rise. Includes interview with Twila Moon of the National Snow and Ice Data Center, who I first met 7 years ago in Ilulissat, Greenland.

“There’s still time” for the planet overall, but what’s “baked in” already effectively means game over for the more vulnerable local situations. Can Jakarta and Miami (much less Vanuatu) survive a foot of sea level? Is the expense of protecting Galveston (current pop <54,000 people) worth it?

Buying people out entirely seems expensive, but not as costly as raising houses, roads and/or sea walls racing against accelerating sea-level rise.
