   How about the dumbasses who closed Indian Point and San Onofre? How about the dumbasses who blocked fracking and pipelines that will likely lead to a fertilizer crises resulting in millions of poor people starving?

     Do you really not know that frackers largely shot themselves in the foot? Based on the investment money, they overpromised and underperformed when it was discovered that fracked fields don’t have a long production life. Large numbers of the frackers went bankrupt, many abandoning leaking wells that the public has to pay for.

     Fertilizers are priced based on the global market. Most ammonia (nitrogen fertilizer) production is tied to natural gas prices which—in case you didn’t notice—is very high due to Russian shenanigans and Chinese demand. Russia also usually exports a lot of ammonia directly.

     San Onofre had physical defect and maintenance issues relating to a radioactive leak dating from 2012 shutdown and inspection. AIUI the faulty components could be replaced and re-certified, but it would be TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE to be cost-effective. While I think it’s stupid to shut down working nuclear power plants that don’t have problems, this is not the case with SONGS. Diablo they’re keeping running.

     Yes, there’s a very high anti-nuke contingent in California, including groups formerly funded by the coal industry, but that doesn’t mean every nuke shutdown was for trivial/emotional reasons.

     As for Indian Point, it seems the anti-nukes have long wanted to close it, but Entergy also noted it would have trouble competing with lower wholesale energy prices.
