Amy Westervelt has done some of the best work looking into the psychological weapons that PR professionals have used to perpetuate a “manly” image of the oil/gas industry, even to the point of threatening global catastrophe. I spoke to her a year ago.

    During the 2008 presidential campaign the Republican rallies featured crowds whipped into a frenzy of chanting “Drill, baby, drill.”

    The psycho-sexual undercurrent was plain to see. But it largely went uncommented on by the political punditry.

      my favorite example is the way the famously gay anthem “YMCA” is the theme at every Trump rally along with cartoonishly hyper masculine Trump images, flags and memes.
      irony totally lost on the crowds, of course, but extremely revealing.

    We identified it as ‘Mother Earth’ so maybe this is all our fault…
    (of course I don’t think so, but consider the media environment we find ourselves in…)
