Climate Denier: Moon Landing was Fake, too

January 29, 2022

For a decade, when talking about climate deniers, Al Gore would say, “Well, some people believe the moon landing was fake, too!”, which would predictably elicit howls of indignation from the science averse community, because, of course they saw it, rightly, I think, as an insult to their intelligence and the general level of discourse in what they tried to present as the “skeptical” community.

Now, Fox News contributor and “conservative influencer” Candace Owens has confirmed that along with her “I don’t know anything about it but I just know it’s fake” stance on climate change, she is also sure that the moon landing was 100 percent deep state doo doo.
I had to read it a couple times to make sure she wasn’t joking, but there it is.

Ms Owens has 3 Million twitter followers, a regular platform on Fox News, appearances on the Joe Rogan show, and regular speaking gigs on college campuses to credulous “conservatives”.

The Overton Window for skepticism vs insanity has moved so far in the last few years, I’m wondering if this will even make a ripple in the right wing info-verse. She dropped it on her twitter feed last night with nary a peep of blowback, and just moved on.
This is not just another point on the contrarian-but-at-least-sentient spectrum. We are in another dimension entirely.

UPDATE: At Trump rally, young man promotes Flat Earth theory, denies evolution and Big Bang. This movement is a grab bag of choose-your-own crazy

Reposting below Owen’s recent conversation with the execrable Joe Rogan, who, to his slight credit, weakly pushed back on the climate denial crazy.

Don’t give Rogan any credit until he has guests that explain climate science rationally, instead of guests constantly attacking it. But, he knows the money is in booking the crazies as guests. He can protest ‘weakly’ all he wants, but his actions speak more loudly.

    • Excellent idea. Peter Sinclair should be on his short list.

I guess they claim they have some “climate scientists” booked in coming weeks. We’ll see, but so far
nobody I know has indicated they are invited.

Maybe he’ll book ‘climate scientists’ like this guy again:

The problem is that Rogan has built an audience that largely doesn’t want to hear rationality in regards to climate science. His audience wants controversy at the best case and confirmation bias at the worst. Someone actually qualified to talk about it would go against that.

So, IF he books someone actually qualified, my bet is that he’d simultaneously book a denier, just to watch the fireworks (=happier audience=better ratings=mo’ money).

One of my standard whines is pointing out that going to the moon was a straightforward task:

    – political support was easy to get to beat out those dam’ commie Russkis.
    – the moon is well-behaved and won’t game the system
    – the physics (Newton got us there) was well-understood
    – individuals competed to be part of the glory
    – the competition was a race, not a fight, so we didn’t have to adapt to changing Russian tactics

And somehow Candace Owens can’t make the distinction between sounds traveling through space and radio waves traveling through space. She’s embracing the brainless character she played in Clueless.

Meanwhile, billions of people carry devices that allow them to communicate around the world, in part because of relativistic-scale physics.

The moon stuff reminds me of a really great sci-fi show on Apple TV – ‘For All Mankind’. Highly recommended – possibly the best sci-fi show going right now.
