  1. Unnecessary shot at religion there. There are plenty of religious people like myself that take climate action seriously.

Unless he’s deconverted recently, Steve’s been very public about his Catholicism. (Some of his writers are definitely atheist, though.)

There are religious talking points used to either deny global warming (God wouldn’t let that happen) or say it’s God’s Plan.

    Some thoughts:

Does anyone here think New Orleans will be saved?

I didn’t watch the show, but honestly, if that’s all Colbert did for the Climate Night thing, that’s pretty pathetic.

On the segment about joining the system to beat it, that’s horribly naive. The system itself prioritizes profit above all else. A CEO can be a good citizen and insist the company behaves well, but if the company doesn’t produce a healthy profit at the same time, that CEO will be replaced. Climate change is allowed because it’s largely an economic externality. Companies are allowed to externalize their contributions to environmental destruction, increasing their profits. The only way to really address that is by regulation – not individual ‘good citizen’ CEOs.

And so I do agree with his bit about regulation.

New Orleans (my home town and where some family still live) is iffy, but I’ve come to see it has a lot of advantages that Houston, the Florida Keys, Tampa Bay and much of the Eastern Seaboard don’t. South Louisiana, criss-crossed with canals, will have bigger chunks taken out of it with every storm surge, though.
