I still think our best work has been making the thick Arctic Ocean sea ice “disappear”. (The increasing “nuisance flooding” along the Atlantic coast is still a work in progress.)

The chances of a 35-year or longer “megadrought” striking the Southwest and central Great Plains by 2100 are above 80 percent if the world stays on its current trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions, scientists from NASA, Columbia University, and Cornell University report in a study published Thursday in the new open-access journal Science Advances.

These are the same foaming at the mouth alarmist that can’t tell anyone what the climate/weather will be next week, let alone at the end of century, telling horror stories that they just make up out of thin air. This is what happened exactly two years after this trash was published by National Geographic Magazine and it, and the rest of the alarmist, expect to be believed regarding their doom and doom reporting where everything is linked to climate change.

Water began pouring over the emergency spillway at Oroville Dam early Saturday for the first time in its 48-year history. State officials continued to say they don’t expect the situation to result in flooding in Oroville or other communities downstream.

We know very well why there was record rainfall in Northern California in 2017. Our now-broken jet stream set up a stationary wave for so long that the meteorologists called it the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge. It channeled an atmospheric river over the area during the winter months, causing flooding throughout the region. If there hadn’t been artificial dams on a number of rivers to capture much of the water, the region would have returned to drought faster. That is, the water filled some reservoirs that year, but had little affect on the groundwater.
Climate and weather are not the same thing. Climate is a range of weather conditions you can expect through the seasons of the year. You should know that.

A new study using a reconstruction of North American drought history over the last 1,000 years found that the drought of 1934 was the driest and most widespread of the last millennium.
Using a tree-ring-based drought record from the years 1000 to 2005 and modern records, scientists from NASA and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory found the 1934 drought was 30 percent more severe than the runner-up drought (in 1580) and extended across 71.6 percent of western North America. For comparison, the average extent of the 2012 drought was 59.7 percent.

I have disagreed with my husband but never disliked him. He is extremely well-informed and well-read.
I have disagreed with my family members (dad, both brothers, one of my sisters) in some engineering and infrastructure topics, but they’re all well-informed.
I have occasionally disagreed with Stephen Jay Gould in a couple of areas that are outside his expertise, but I have learned a lot from his detailed work on evolution biology, evolution and baseball statistics. (I’ve read about 10 of his books.)
I have disagreed with illusionist Penn Jillette about a lot of things, but respect his skill and knowledge in his area of expertise, include how easily people delude themselves and fall for well-constructed illusions.
I have occasionally disagreed with my hydrogeology professor, but only on things that were peripheral to his area of expertise. I learned a lot from him.
I disagreed occasionally with infectious disease doctor Mark Crislip, but not with any of his bimonthly analysis of studies of infectious and parasitic diseases (The Puscast). I learned a lot about how infectious disease research is done from him.
I caught a fault in something a petrology TA said, but that was because I had sat through a lunchtime talk that specifically addressed that topic. Otherwise he seemed to be on top of the subject.
I sometimes disagreed with the approach of my microbiology professor “Dr. Ed” but always respected her mastery of microbial analytics. Her insistence that we draw cellular structures and always mark the scale was inspired.
Of course, I ditch any class or book when it becomes clear that they don’t know what they’re talking about. (I may not be an expert in, say, diabetes, but I can tell when others don’t even get the basics right.)
If there’s ever a disagreement with NASA data or NOAA data, it has always turned out to be because someone completely misinterpreted it, not because it isn’t reliable.

Obviously, the drought mentioned in the 2015 reference is the same damn drought we have now. Extreme precipitation events are part of the pattern, but they haven’t been enough to break the overall pattern of aridity that continues to build in the American West.

So what is your plan to end this drought in the American West? Can you name a period of time when there were not droughts taking place in various places on the globe? This July 19, 1994 article in the New York Times, “Severe Ancient Droughts: A Warning to California”, certainly puts a more scientific view of California drought than what one will receive if they only look at what is happening today in the West and how various ‘news’ sources are choosing to report on it.
“BEGINNING about 1,100 years ago, what is now California baked in two droughts, the first lasting 220 years and the second 140 years. Each was much more intense than the mere six-year dry spells that afflict modern California from time to time, new studies of past climates show. The findings suggest, in fact, that relatively wet periods like the 20th century have been the exception rather than the rule in California for at least the last 3,500 years, and that mega-droughts are likely to recur.
[…]This method identified droughts lasting from A.D. 892 to A.D. 1112 and from A.D. 1209 to A.D. 1350. Judging by how far the water levels dropped during these periods — as much as 50 feet in some cases — Dr. Stine concluded that the droughts were not only much longer, they were far more severe than either the drought of 1928 to 1934, California’s worst in modern times, or the more recent severe dry spell of 1987 to 1992.
In medieval times the California droughts coincided roughly with a warmer climate in Europe, which allowed the Vikings to colonize Greenland and vineyards to grow in England, and with a severe dry period in South America, which caused the collapse of that continent’s most advanced pre-Inca empire, the rich and powerful state of Tiwanaku, other recent studies have found.
Does Tiwanaku’s fate await modern California?
Dr. Stine, who reported his findings last month in the British journal Nature, says that California, like Tiwanaku, presents “a classic case of people building themselves beyond the carrying capacity of the land,” which is determined not by wet times but by dry ones. “What we’ve done in California is fail to recognize that there are lean times ahead,” said Dr. Stine, “and they are a lot leaner than anything we’ve come up against” in the modern era.
This article seems to correctly imply that there was a global Medieval Warm Period and this would have occurred when CO₂ levels were, in all likely hood, far lower than what they are now.

My god, you’re right. Since there was warming about a thousand years ago that may or may not have been global and may or may not have been overlapping in time and co2 levels were lower than today, co2 can’t possibly be causing warming now. It is so apparent. Thanks.

The only thing that I got from reading what Gavin A. Schmidt had wrote on 12 July 2006 was the same garbage that is intended to protect Mike Mann and his debunked hockey stick graph that tried to eliminate the MWP. There is so much evidence that there was a MWP that it takes a total and complete dishonest charlatan, such as what Gavin A. Schmidt is, to try to claim that it did not occur. The reason these frauds are so opposed to the MWP is that if it was warmer then than it is now, how could CO₂ be a factor in today’s warming?

Gavin Schmidt asked; “You ok with that?” Gavin is very concerned about a site that gives the Earth’s temperatures from over 66,255 sites and those temperature do not seem to comport with what he believes the temperature should be. Is Gavin OK with what follows?
“In his original publications of the stick, Mann purported to use a standard method known as principal component analysis, or PCA, to find the dominant features in a set of more than 70 different climate records.
But it wasnt so. McIntyre and McKitrick obtained part of the program that Mann used, and they found serious problems. Not only does the program not do conventional PCA, but it handles data normalization in a way that can only be described as mistaken.
Now comes the real shocker. This improper normalization procedure tends to emphasize any data that do have the hockey stick shape, and to suppress all data that do not. To demonstrate this effect, McIntyre and McKitrick created some meaningless test data that had, on average, no trends. This method of generating random data is called Monte Carlo analysis, after the famous casino, and it is widely used in statistical analysis to test procedures. When McIntyre and McKitrick fed these random data into the Mann procedure, out popped a hockey stick shape!

Some molecules have atomic bonds which absorb certain wavelengths of thermal radiation. Nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) do not aborb any infrared radiation, but CO2, CH4, NO and other molecules absorb and re-emit radiation of various wavelengths. Such molecules form the greenhouse gases that keep planets like Earth and Venus from being as cold as Mars or the Moon.

It is truly amazing that these people are trying to conduct an experiment that the very intelligent and capable John Tyndall had performed 162 years ago using instruments that he had constructed himself about the properties of CO₂.
In 1859 Tyndall began to study the capacities of various gases to absorb or transmit radiant heat. He showed that the main atmospheric gases, nitrogen and oxygen, are almost transparent to radiant heat, whereas water vapour, carbon dioxide and ozone are such good absorbers that, even in small quantities, these gases absorb heat radiation much more strongly than the rest of the atmosphere.
Tyndall concluded that water vapour is the strongest absorber of heat in the atmosphere and is the principal gas controlling surface air temperature by inhibiting leakage of the Earth’s heat back into outer space. He declared that, without water vapour, the Earth’s surface would be ‘held fast in the iron grip of frost’ – the greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse effect works as follows. Most of the Sun’s energy is radiated as visible light. This is not absorbed by the atmosphere and passes through to warm the Earth. The warm Earth radiates heat back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation. This is avidly absorbed by atmospheric water vapour and carbon dioxide, trapping the heat and preventing the Earth from freezing.

The point of the demo was to show that CO2 blocks some wavelengths of light that are invisible to humans.
Do you accept that CO2 molecules can block certain wavelengths of infrared light? (In terms of physics, their atomic bonds absorb and readmit that certain range of wavelengths.)
Do you accept that an atmosphere just made of nitrogen, oxygen and/or inert gases would not block any infrared emissions from the surface of a planet?

I have no problem dealing with people who are fundamentally ignorant about fundamental physics and chemistry, unless they are just trolling by spewing irrelevant factoids and determined to learn anything that might conflict with what they’ve already decided.

This one with the less than convincing Richard Alley also tries to make the weak minded folks believe that there is some kind of “canopy” that traps the escaping heat and sends it back to the planet, At what altitude and just where is this “canopy” is something that the person fails to explain, as do the other fools who show this kind of nonsense. We know that at 18,000 feet there is only 1/2 of the atmosphere that is present at sea level, but to this person representing the National Science Foundation that is meaningless.

The planet’s atmosphere contains molecules that let wavelengths of light that humans can see pass through. Just because gases (like O2, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen) are invisible to humans doesn’t mean they aren’t there.
You can’t see oxygen, but you would die without it.
Do you know that vehicles re-entering the atmosphere can burn up due to friction with the invisible molecules in our atmosphere? Invisible does not mean non-existent.
If you want to know about the various layers of the atmosphere, then fucking look them up learn about them. Don’t just say that scientists and jet designers and people who track volcanic emissions are making things up. Did it ever occur to you that you can learn about the atmosphere all by yourself without having somebody to hold your hand? Stop acting like a six-year-old who refuses to accept anything he doesn’t immediately know everything about.

This is an interesting site to look into and it coincides with the above fact about carbon dioxide being 1.6 times heavier than the atmosphere that it is in. This point was sadly proven on Aug, 21, 1986 when Lake Nyos in Cameroon released about 1.6 million tons of CO2 that spilled over the lip of the lake and down into a valley and killed 1,700 people within 16 miles of the lake

It appears that Wikipedia, whose links I presented that were censored due to the facts involved with this source that the ones who are too lazy to look up verified sources use, will not have these facts about rhymeswithgoalie’s invented devil in the sky, CO₂.
It is interesting to get the views of someone who never took the time to learn any actual science that pertains to what is a mystery for her, climatology. Rhymeswithgoalie’s post make clear that climatology is something that she has never had any exposure to. The graph from the IPCC’s own gold-standard for temperature observations; the UK’s HadCRUT4 global dataset shows that the empirical history since 1850 and the recent global cooling, that the 2100AD temperature is much more likely to reflect the established +0.47°C per century trend than what the hiding under their beds in fear alarmist, such as rhymeswithgoalie are spouting, with no evidence, that they are right. It is not strange that since these people have nothing to verify that their devil in the sky, that they fear as much as the Coronavirus, CO₂, that a steadily & slight increasing temperature on Earth since the end of the Little Ice Age just has to be to CO₂, when folks blessed with the ability to use logic know that it is due to what that orb in the sky, the SUN, that is 99.86% of the mass of the solar system, is beaming towards an Earth blessed to be receiving this life giving warmth.
There are some obsessed with the supposed increase of 338 ppm to 415 ppm of CO₂ and I hope that this information will help the alarmist to sleep better at nights.

I know that you understand that these 77 additional ppm are spread out over this 16 miles in different one inch segments and wouldn’t it be a task to be told to sort out the 415 pennies from the number that it would take to make up $10,000.
At 415 parts per million CO₂ is a minor constituent of earth’s atmosphere– less than 4/100ths of 1% of all gases present. Compared to former geologic times, earth’s current atmosphere is CO₂ impoverished.
Let’s picture this in another way to really get an idea of the scale of CO₂ compared to the total atmosphere. The Eiffel Tower in Paris is 324 meters high (1063ft). If the height of the Eiffel Tower represented the total size of the atmosphere then the natural level of CO₂ would be 8.75 centimeters of that height (3.4 inches) and the amount added by humans up until today would be an extra 3.76 centimeters (1.5 inches)
Thus, the 3.2 trillion tons of CO₂ in today’s 5.5 quadrillion ton atmosphere represents 6.3kg of CO₂ above each square metre of Earth, which perhaps doesn’t sound a lot. If it covered the planet in a film of dry ice, it would be just 3.7mm thick.

The planet is warming now because of increasing greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.
Not all of the warming events in the past were because of increasing greenhouse gases, so what’s your point?
You’re not really big on this whole “logic” thing, are you?

The Earth could stand to have more of this trace gas that is the bases for all terrestrial life on Earth. Obviously any one so brainwashed regarding this devil in the sky that they have invented CO₂ to be the agent of doom for the Earth would not acknowledge that the dinosaurs that roamed the Earth 250 million years ago knew a world with five times more carbon dioxide than is present on Earth today. That is 417 ppm X 5 = 2,085 ppm. The Earth and the dinosaurs lived in harmony with those levels of CO₂ until the asteroid hit the Earth in the Yucatan Peninsula and pretty well changed things and people need to know that the 2,085 ppm of CO₂ didn’t have one damn thing to do with the end of the dinosaurs.

In another disgusting indication of where climate science/debate is at today, a handful of Wikipedia editors have “voted” to delete the immensely useful and topical page: “List of Scientists who Disagree with the Scientific Consensus on Global Warming“…
Here’s the reasoning for the censorship given by one of the Wiki editors:
“The result was delete. This is because I see a consensus here that there is no value in having a list that combines the qualities of a) being a scientist, in the general sense of that word, and b) disagreeing with the scientific consensus on global warming.”
In other words, this decision was apparently taken by a single individual, the ‘Editor’, in Wiki parlance, points out Dr Roger Higgs. His/her “consensus” (ironic choice of word) is based on the online discussion among Wikipedia ‘Users’ at that site (link here), each of whom was evidently asked to vote on whether to “Keep” or “Delete” the page. However, far from a consensus, by my count (please check it) there were 35 Deletes and 19 Keeps. What qualifies the Editor to dictate that 35 to 19 constitutes a consensus, and use that claim to justify deleting a key document on arguably the most important (and most expensive) global social issue since World War Two?

MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN (CBSLA) – A popular Northern California ski resort announced this week that it will be staying open through July thanks to some “mammoth” snowfall.
The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area – located about 180 miles east of Modesto in the Sierra Nevada – announced Tuesday that it will remain open through at least July 4 after receiving what it claimed was the most snow of any mountain in North America.
According to the resort, the ski area has received more than 37 feet of snowfall this season at the summit and 15 feet of snow just this month alone.

Snow covers the landscape around central Montana’s Highwood Mountains near Great Falls on Sunday. The Natural Resources Conservation Service in Bozeman reports that snowpack levels are near or above normal across the state.

I’m not sure what Mark Mev is out to prove; but, if he is like most foaming at the mouth anthropogenic climate change advocates, it has to be that the planet is about to be incinerated due to CO₂. This indicates that the ski areas could have got some of that white stuff called snow this spring, whether Mark Mev wants to acknowledge it or not.

At least 2 400 preliminary daily cold temperature records, including cold maximums and minimums, were broken or tied at longer-term sites (75+ years of data) in the United States from February 12 to 16, 2021. The cold snap peaked from February 14 to 16. Another winter storm will affect a large area from Friday, February 19 — from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Over just the past week, much of the Lower 48 has been punished with record-breaking cold and unusually heavy snow and ice, NWS Weather Prediction Center said.
From the Pacific Northwest across the Rockies and into the Southern Plains and Midwest, the snowfall has been measured in feet. Ice and snow continue to plague Texas and the Northeast.

A late-season cold blast has been dumping spring snow from North America to parts of Europe since early May, causing records to tumble in several areas as the cold Arctic air ripped through west to east.
The intense Arctic outbreak brought rare snow and record cold temperatures to portions of North America, with some areas experiencing below-freezing temperatures and significant snowfall.
On May 5, residents across Northern New England woke up to unseasonal May snow. “As you go across the Great Lakes and the interior Northeast, we actually have wind chills in the freezing range,” Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean described.
On May 9, unseasonably cold air swept across Lake Erie, dumping snow as well in Lake View. Winter-like conditions then resulted in low visibility.
On May 12, Toronto recorded -3 °C (26.6 °F), the coldest in the history of Canada. Local media noted that the last time Toronto residents felt temperatures this cold was back in 1939, during the Great Depression period, with -2.2 °C (28 °F).
Thundersnow in Kingston and surrounding regions were reported in southern Ontario. According to the Weather Network, the Sun’s angle caused air parcels to rise up into the cold and unstable air, where temperatures where around -20 °C (-4 °F).
“The air aloft was so chilly that super-cooled water droplets accreted on the falling snowflakes before they reached the surface, distorting the classic snowflake,” Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton explained.
Hamilton noted that a thunderstorm is an unusual form of weather that usually occurs during winter, and it’s particularly rare that it happened mid-May.
Meanwhile, Ottawa also recorded its coldest May 12 ever as the Ottawa Airport recorded temperatures of -4.6 °C (26.7 °F), breaking the previous record of -1.7 °C (28.9 °F) set in 1940.
Much of Europe reported heavy snow and piercing cold temperatures since the first week of May.
In a video uploaded by Romania’s National Road Infrastructure Management Company on May 7, roads along the Cluj area was shown covered in snow as snow continued to fall. Snow-removal operations were then carried out that day.
In Lithuania, photos and videos on social media showed whiteout conditions as snow blanketed trees and flowers.
Very rare snowfall also reached Turkey, with up to 10 cm (4 inches) recorded in high sections. Municipal teams conducted snow removal in some areas.
On May 11, parts of Scotland were hit by snow as a mass of Arctic air traveled south on the back of a meridional jet stream flow. The polar blast came after the UK experienced a relatively mild April this year.

The brainwashed alarmist say that when it is record breaking cold over large portions of the globe, that is just weather. When it is few hot days in2019 in France or now on the Western part of the US, that is a sure sign of climate change caused by their manufactured devil in the sky, CO₂.

I remember that January extreme weather in Europe and Spain in particular, University of Bristol had warned of extreme events some time before. There was quite a lot of news about it at the time.
