Andrea Dutton PhD: When the Climate Change Penny Drops
November 5, 2020
Even with the elevated awareness of climate as a political winner, I think most of the population has not yet had that wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night “oh shit” moment about climate change yet. As more people do, perceptions will change.

From Maryland all the way along the coast to Texas, storm-surging, beach-eating, rain-bombing tropical storms will be reminders for many. In Alaska the melting permafrost is destroying infrastructure (and washing into the sea). In Phoenix, they’ve counted 53 days over 110°F this year. While we’re at it, record-size wildfires and choking red skies over your home might penetrate a few thick skulls. A few dam- or levee-busting rainstorms in the heartland might get a few people’s attention, too.
Other than that, there’s nothing to worry about.
