UPDATE: Denialist Says Greens, not Climate, Burned his House

September 16, 2020

No Fuel like an Old Fuel.

Daily Beast:

Among the thousands who have lost their homes to unprecedented West Coast wildfires in recent days is one of the notorious Oregon 11—the Republican state senators who twice staged a walkout to stop a Democratic majority from passing a climate change bill.

But despite an overwhelming scientific majority that ties the extent and ferocity of the wildfires at least in part to climate change, State Sen. Fred Girod’s personal encounter with the result has left him only more set in his views.

The 69-year-old dentist-turned-politician blames the loss of the house he called “my forever home” not on climate change, but on environmentalists.

“Climate change is not the problem,” he told The Daily Beast on Monday. “The environmentalists have loaded up the timber area with nothing but fuel. That cost me my house.”

He added, “I also lost my pets. We barely got out.”

Girod had lived there with his wife, Daphne, and their three cats. The fury that now filled his voice sounded more genuine than might be expected from somebody who was just trying to please contributors who are big-time polluters.

He seemed to be a bona fide non-believer.

There was an opinion piece in WP a few days ago. I didn’t agree with much of the writer’s politics, but there were a number of parts of it that I thought should be mentioned. Here is as good any place, as it applies to the dimwit mentioned:

Goodbye, readers, and good luck — you’ll need it

“Second, people have a hard time changing their minds. Once their minds are made up, they are relatively impervious to argument, evidence and persuasion. Life is infinitely complex. To simplify, people make assumptions. If they routinely changed all their assumptions, they’d go crazy, as would the people around them. People do change, but the catalyst is usually some traumatic event.”

The traumatic event didn’t even work for this guy.

So, were Girod and his neighbors campaigning for controlled burns and clear-cut-logging in their back yards? Or did they just want the gubmint to send workers to rake the floors?

  3. Anthony William O'brien Says:

Progressives fail to understand just how deeply climate change challenges many conservative belief structures. Their whole thought process is about dominate or be dominated, cooperation is an alien concept. Nature is to be dominated, not acknowledged as necessary.

Their god is a really nasty dude who requires precise obedience to a random set of rules that don’t need to have any meaning other than he said so. Proper parenting is domination of your children, bending them to your will. “Love one another” only applies if you are one of us. Anything not ours is from the Enemy including music.

They love Trump, not despite his flaws, but because of them and how that pisses off progressives. They are incapable of seeing the danger.

“The enemy of my enemy, is my friend”makes for some very strange bedfellows.

He’s right. I’ve seen environmentalists take truckload after truckload of tinder, kerosene and rolled-up-newspaper logs and deposit them in the forests near his house. It was a big effort, but it paid off.
