It’s hard to balance the long view– what we could call ‘the view from nowhere’ (though Thomas Nagel didn’t quite mean the same thing when he coined the phrase) with our emotional responses to individual suffering. But being confronted by individual suffering that illustrates a broader issue can help people grasp the significance of that issue.
