Trump insists on the 2024 date for an obvious reason. He wanted it to be Mars, and the NASA guys told him that was a tad unrealistic.

Beyond Trump’s warped ego, I generally believe human nature includes the innate need to spread to new places. Assuming civilization doesn’t fall apart sooner rather than later, I have little doubt we’ll be increasing space missions. It will be money and resources much better spent trying to improve more urgent needs at a critical time in human history, but we aren’t exactly logical on our spending patterns.

Related, Trump’s 4th event was $2.5 million taken directly from the U.S. National Park Service when funds are already being diverted from it:

Has anyone else noticed how practically every recent (last 20 years or so) science fiction show or book has had a bit about the Earth being screwed up? I can hardly name one where it doesn’t happen. In them, humans expand amazingly into space, but the Earth is either destroyed or massively depleted. Even ‘The Expanse’, which is a sort of techno-utopian fever dream, eventually gets around to destroying the planet. Star Trek is a sort of carry-over from a time when we didn’t actually think we were going to wreck the joint, but the current versions include whole planets being destroyed.

“….human nature includes the innate need to spread to new places”?

IMO, it’s a bit of a stretch to extend that to off the planet, particularly to a place as distant and inhospitable as Mars. It’s getting quite tiresome to keep hearing from the morons that we NEED to go to the moon and Mars—-a distraction from the real issues by the Trumpers, a self-justification for wasting money by the NASA and space contractor types who want to keep their jobs, and self-indulgence on the part of the Musks and other rich folk who have nothing better to do.

Planet A is dying before our eyes, and soon many of the “old” places will become uninhabitable. Maher speaks truth.

Alaska is currently reeling under record heat levels, at a time the state needs wisdom, knowledge, skill and learning the state governor has just cut the budget the Alaskan university system by $130m – a staggering 41% of its budget.

Is dumbing down the human race part of the new world. ?

Are the Alaskan voters O.K with this ?

He’d just cut the supreme courts budget over their pro-abortion stance.

What an earth is going on in modern day politics.?

“In a shocked response, the University of Alaska system’s president, James R Johnsen, said Dunleavy’s veto “will strike an institutional and reputational blow from which we may likely never recover”. Scott Downing, faculty senate leader at the University of Alaska Anchorage, told the Washington Post: “It’s going to be devastating. The effects on programs, on the students, on staff and faculty are just going to be – it’s kind of unthinkable.”

    • redskylite Says:

“The US state of Alaska, part of which lies inside the Arctic Circle, is sweltering under a heatwave, with record temperatures recorded in several areas, including its largest city.

Temperatures reached 90F (32C) in Anchorage on Thursday, shattering the city’s previous record of 85F.”

When I was in high school, Alaska (along with Hawaii) was just another shithole “country” like Puerto Rico (and Hawaii was an island, too). And people think “it’s so far away and NIMBY, why should I care?”. They are much more concerned about the wind turbines in their back yards giving them cancer.

(Dumbing down the human race has been part of the right wing agenda since Ronald Reagan’s time—-why are you just now noticing?)

      • redskylite Says:

Hey, I left the “West” behind in early Reagan day’s, to work around the empty quarter, where there was no late night shows on T.V. Arrived back to the free press at the end of Bill Clinton’s time at the helm.

A lot of catching up to do it seems.

  3. Brent Jensen-Schmidt Says:

To state the bleeding obvious, dictators and oligarchic ‘elites’ do not want a educated aware populous. Dumming down below the idiot in chief is a big ask but having affect apparently world wide. Said in all arrogance.

  4. Bryson Brown Says:

I seem to recall the libertarian candidate for President in 2016 making the same insane pitch about going to Mars if we manage to destroy Earth. Whose this we, who’ll be on the ships to Mars? I think I know– the same rich idiots who are hell-bent on burning every drop of oil and cubic meter of natural gas we can extract…
