David Bernhardt isn’t a random “GOPer” as the headline implies, he is the new Secretary of the Interior (replacing the disgraced Zinke).
This was his first appearance before a Congressional committee.
They are debating budget priorities. Bernhardt, for example, wants to zero out the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Congress wants it to continue.
Basically, Bernhardt has promised to continue most of Zinke’s initiatives.

“So you’re a zero or a one, is that it?”

    I’d say he’s definitely a zero.

    • dumboldguy Says:

He’s also another of the overfed toads who “toady” to Trump, the fossil fuel interests, and those who would rape public lands for profit.

  3. Lionel Smith Says:

Time to disallow the use of ‘Hon.’ by toadies such as Bernhardt. It should be earned not automatically applied because you have the wealth to gain a position of representation and trust.

With this admin we are doomed. No way we will keep warming from making this planet less habitable!

    • dumboldguy Says:

Actually, a large part (if not virtually the whole) planet is going to become not “LESS habitable” but UN-inhabitable. One of the latest and best books on the topic has those words in its title.

THE UNINHABITABLE EARTH: LIFE AFTER WARMING, by David Wallace-Wells, Tim Duggan Books-Crown, 2019

  5. jimbills Says:

The swamp monster attended Bernhardt’s confirmation:

Not climate change related, but so bleeping typical:

Step 1) Commit fraud and be sent to jail.

Step 2) Write a book stroking the ego of the one narcissist who can get you pardoned.

    Step 3) Get pardoned.

  6. Bryson Brown Says:

It’s clear as a bell who counts in this world. Old Bushies are interviewed about possible war in Iran– they managed to kill hundreds of thousands (including ~5000 US soldiers) in Iraq, and still haven’t cleaned up the mess that left behind– now they want to make a much bigger mess. Yet the press isn’t talking to Shinseki or to anyone else who had the smarts to predict Bush’s war would be a disaster.

On the other hand, was it really such a disaster? It surely helped Bush get re-elected– there’s nothing more “Presidential” than bombing brown or yellow people somewhere far away. So how can the US say no to this new opportunity?

And getting on to the real point, how can Donald say no? His friends the Saudis want Iran crushed, so they can continue promoting their own fanatical, brutal and violent Salafist brand of Islam…and the Saudis like Donald so much (they say so!). That obviously makes them much better allies than NATO could ever be (on the side, they also agree with the whole torture thing that Donald is so big on).

Personally I’d like to do a good, long Rip Van Winkle. Wake me up when it’s all over.

    • Keith Omelvena Says:

You may be on to something there. Iran just needs to massage the Trumpian ego, offer some prime land for a golf course, and hey presto, war averted and he may even sell them whatever tech they desire.

You could be like Buck Rogers, and wake up to a whole different set of problems.

  8. Lionel Smith Says:

Here is a warmonger who should be sent to any frontline that he opens up, or even to areas where his past misdemeanours have created death and destruction.

Talking of those latter, how many are aware that Iraq had a historic seed-bank of grains from the area of the fertile crescent with hundreds of varieties going back several millennia, this happened to be at Abu Ghraib.

Fortunately Iraq had the foresight to create a duplicate. Unfortunately this was in Syria at Aleppo.

Hum, looks like one potential headache for the GMO promoters has been neutralised.

    Sorry lost the link:
