I “like” this only because Maher’s excellent jokes make me forget (briefly) how unfunny the things are that he jokes about. I have commented many times here about human demographics and population dynamics. The problem is NOT birth rates and having too many babies—the human birth rate is way down in most countries. The problem is that the death rate is also way down—-too many people living too long, and more and more of them wanting to live a “western” lifestyle and (rightfully) consume “their share” of the world’s resources, of which there are simply not enough (as Maher points out).

CAGW will solve the problem once we pass the looming tipping points. Birth rates will go even lower because people will be too busy trying to survive to make babies, death rates will skyrocket, and the human population will decline until it reaches a level the Earth can sustain (which may be as low as a few hundred million). Welcome to the Anthropocene (or the end thereof).

    • redskylite Says:

Climate change has affected population counts very significantly in the past and will do in the future as you say.

“During the Medieval Warm Period (the period prior to 1300), the population of Europe exploded compared to prior eras, reaching levels that were not matched again in some places until the nineteenth century—indeed parts of rural France today are less populous than at the beginning of the fourteenth century.”

At the very least I would like every woman on the planet to be free from outside pressure to have kids, and have access to birth control. Too many cultures prefer girls to be uneducated, make babies, and just keep house.

  3. J4Zonian Says:

People persist n spreading this comfortable lie. I should say “rich, white people, mostly males” spread this lie. It’s the most effective way to put the blame on poor people of color for the problems rich people of mostly white cause, and continue life on Earth, however reduced, with white males still struggling to retain their delusions of power and control.

It’s the little lies that make the big lie credible to other privileged white people:

Crowded planes? Come on, a perfect metaphor for this problem, but not even a half-decent joke because it’s aimed at the wrong target. Why are planes crowded? Because flying is an extravagance, and profit-making dominance is the end-all and be-all of existence in the US now. A small number of rich people fly roomy and pampered in first class; everyone else is in steerage.

No, Bill, lots of liberals and most progressives understand that fewer people would be better. Especially fewer conservatives. The ways to accomplish both are to emphasize equality, empowerment and education for all, especially women, and ensure security in sickness, old age, and hard times as well as free access to contraception and all family planning services. Some liberals are smart enough and mature enough to understand that our problems are caused almost completely by rich people, and numbers of people, however scary they’re made to seem, have almost nothing to do iwith the problems.

We have 6 years left to solve the climate crisis by reducing human emissions at least 90%, and the rest soon after. Otherwise, we face exponentially rising risk of so many disasters and tipping points we’ll be unable to implement solutions at all. Population growth is 1. already slowing, 2. not the problem, and 3. not any significant part of the solution.

      What drivel …
[1] Birth rates are not determined by white men, of whom liberals tend to be the actually privileged. You are denying agency to women, who influence birth rates a lot more than men. Sexist! And white men do not control birth rates in Africa. Racist!
[2] The reason we fly too much is because there is almost no tax on kerosene. Where I live planes consume as much fuel as the whole fleet of passenger cars. But they pay 10x as much as do airline companies, because in every country they are worried about their airline sector being non-competitive. The problem is not greed or profits, but lack of policy, which would eliminate fossil-fuel subsidies and tax breaks and price in the future devastation of the planet into fossil-fuel pricing.

[3] I do however agree on one point. As long as an American has 50x the resource footprint of an African, we needn’t worry too much about more African babies. At least, not on account of their resource claim.

      • dumboldguy Says:

Agreed, except that we do need to worry some about African babies—if they survive and their countries develop more, they are going to want an increasing share of the world’s resources, and that’s going to lead to conflict. For example they’re going to want back the land that China has bought/leased in Africa to grow food for Chinese—the Chinese are not going to like that and that may cause shooting, to say nothing of the food shortages that may occur in China if the Africans win.

        • Peter A. Dimitriou Says:

wow, what an idiotic uninformed statement, Africa occupies mostly the regions where climate change impacts will be the strongest and shows an amazing mysoginistc lack of understanding of the content and its people.

          • dumboldguy Says:

Who are you talking to, Peter? Doldrom or DOG?

The only “idiotic uninformed statement” evident here is yours, since there is not even a hint of misogyny in either of our comments.

      • rhymeswithgoalie Says:

And white men do not control birth rates in Africa.

They do have influence, though. US policy of cutting aid and funding to other countries is constrained by the requirement of no abortion, at least, and heavy restrictions on birth control. RCC* policy of no birth control has an impact on the Catholic portions of Africa, too (besides discouraging the use of condoms that would slow the spread of HIV).
        _____
*College of Cardinals is still mostly white

        • dumboldguy Says:

Yep, and it is not really an exaggeration to say “control” rather than “influence”. It’s white men’s control of just about everything on this planet through colonialism-capitalism-globalization-greed that has brought us to the present sorry state of affairs.

      • J4Zonian Says:

        What drivel …
Exactly the question I would ask you: What drivel? I see no drivel except yours.

[1] Birth rates are not determined by white men,
Straw person. Obviously, this has absolutely nothing to do what I said, and besides which, huh?

of whom liberals tend to be the actually privileged.
        Coal sludge.

You are denying agency to women,
Meaningless fracking fluid, and No, I’m not. I don’t have that power, and if I did I’d arrange to have them raised in a way that gave them more agency.

who influence birth rates a lot more than men. Sexist! And white men do not control birth rates in Africa. Racist!
Utter nonsense. Are you ever going to get to an actual point or argument or are you just going to spin straw and make bizarre irrelevant assertions?

[2] The reason we fly too much is because there is almost no tax on kerosene.
That’s an incredibly simplistic bit of nonsense equivalent to blaming one piece of straw (different cultural allusion to straw here; try to keep up) for every injured camel. It’s a resort to the conservative frame being used by the right to delay climate action while trying to extort concessions from the naive center-right. There are all kinds of reasons we fly too much. Your thing is a result of the problem(s), not a cause.

Where I live planes consume as much fuel as the whole fleet of passenger cars. But they pay 10x as much as do airline companies,
        Huh?
because in every country they are worried about their airline sector being non-competitive.
Huh? They’re not worried about their auto sector? Their increasingly non-competitive fossil and fissile energy sector? And btw, where do you live that either that fuel consumption thing is true or you think it is?

The problem is not greed or profits, but lack of policy, which would eliminate fossil-fuel subsidies and tax breaks and price in the future devastation of the planet into fossil-fuel pricing.
Well, you’re almost sort of in the general vicinity of being right here. The proximal problem is deregulation, the systematic destruction of protections from corporate/oligarchic predation, that the right has engaged in for decades. And when I say greed, I really mean the collection of addictions, attachment disorders, narcissism, fear, and rage and unexpressed grief, shame, and guilt turned by civilization into acquisitiveness that’s best called Wetiko Disease.

[3] I do however … As long as an American [sic] has 50x the resource footprint of an African, we needn’t worry too much about more African babies. At least, not on account of their resource claim.
No, we have to worry about them because the mental illness of the rich is going to cause them even more unimaginable suffering than it has for centuries, and both we and they are human, and alive. The average USer actually emits 250 times more GHGs than an average Ethiopian, btw.

I do regret the wandering i in the last post. The quirkiest artifact of pasting responses in here yet.

J4Z – Excellent original piece written from the heart – thumbs up from me .

  5. dumboldguy Says:

Redsky may suffer from the same confirmation bias as Jeffy re: human demographics, since he too is reacting “from the heart” rather than from the brain where science knowledge resides—-emotions have no part in science equations (except in psychology and political neuroscience).

Jeffy simply refuses to accept that humans are animals, we live in a biosphere along with uncounted numbers of plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi, AND are subject to the same laws of nature as any other living thing—-when it comes to survival, numbers DO matter, since the environment cannot support unlimited numbers of living things. AND those living things live in a very complicated web of interaction re: “feeding” each other. To deny that is actually the thinking (and emotional bias) of a conservative.

Humans came along with their technology and all-consuming greed and desire to get rich, and have overridden the laws of nature that have operated for billions of years on Earth. In just a couple of centuries, we have put the ENTIRE biosphere at risk, and if our numbers were smaller, we’d have more time to deal with the fast-approaching CAGW and Sixth Extinction.

Jeffy simply refuses to engage in an intelligent discussion because he speaks more from a base of emotion (heart) than from the head, as seen in his first two paragraphs. No one is “blaming” the “poor people of color” for anything, and Jeffy’s “lie” bullshit makes me grit my teeth.

The reason there are so many of them is that the WHITE people who colonized their countries, enslaved them, and plundered their resources also brought modern science and medicine, the green revolution, and ideas of capitalist “growth” to them, which allowed their populations to grow so rapidly in the past century.

This is one of the dumbest things Jeffy has ever said—-“Some liberals are smart enough and mature enough to understand that our problems are caused almost completely by rich people, and NUMBERS OF PEOPLE, HOWEVER ***SCARY*** THEY’RE MADE TO SEEM, HAVE ALMOST ***NOTHING***TO DO WITH THE PROBLEMS” Scary? Nothing? JFC! (grit teeth again).

Another dumb statement (and almost incoherent to boot) is this—-“Population GROWTH is 1. already slowing, 2. not the problem, and 3. NOT ANY SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE SOLUTION”. (grit teeth yet again)

Anyone with a brain is smart enough to understand that our problems are caused by rich people, and Jeffy has hammered on that idea here for years. Anyone with a brain (and not blinded by confirmation bias) will also understand the contention that population STABILITY and slow growth is the problem, and the only solution is going to be a rapid population DECLINE. That is NOT going to happen within the next 6 or 10 years, and Jeffy should be a smart enough liberal to know that his “ways to accomplish” fewer people are not happening fast enough to matter. Buy some guns, Jeffy—-it’s unfortunate, but they’re likely to be most important in deciding who gets to remake the new world that’s coming.

PS to Bob Do comments that are written from the heart AND BRAIN rate any thumbs up?

  6. dumboldguy Says:

PS I mentioned the 2017 movie “Downsizing” on another thread. It’s about humans who undergo a procedure that shrinks them by a factor of 1/2477 to decrease their “footprint” and save the planet. Netflix describes it under Genres as “Comedy, Spoofs and Satire”. It IS that, and enjoyable, but it does have some messages about what it means to be “rich” and lead a rich lifestyle. It gets 5 stars in my book.

  7. jimbills Says:

I’d like to think Millennials are have fewer children because they are worried about climate change, but it’s really because of economic pressures. Millennials tend to worker harder than previous generations:
    https://hbr.org/2016/08/millennials-are-actually-workaholics-according-to-research

    And they have less money:

  8. redskylite Says:

Changing household structures, economic growth and contraceptives prompt dramatic drop in fertility rate, study finds.

According to the study, this dramatic decline in fertility rate is due to the changing nature of the household structure, economic growth and available contraception.

Declines in fertility rates are consistent across all Arab countries regardless of wealth.

“[This is] primarily because women are getting more educated in the Arab world and they are seeking a different future and aspirations for themselves,” said Inhorn.
