Reposting: TV Mets Take on Climate Change

January 4, 2019

As the new year begins, we look back on 2018 as a watershed year in which climate emerged as a top flight political issue.
A few years ago, I interviewed a number of TV Meteorologists about their role in communicating climate science – something an increasing number view as a primary responsibility.

Ellicott City had another 1000 year flood just two years after the one in the video—same result—-massive destruction of buildings just rebuilt after 2016 and sensational TV news coverage, but next to NO mention of climate change.

The major outlets here in the DC area—-NBC, CBS, Fox, and ABC—-spend little time talking about climate change and how it is affecting the weather. Which is strange, considering that 2018 was the wettest year EVER here.

“DC’s official recording site at Reagan National Airport ended up with 66.28″ of rain, which broke the previous record of 61.33″ from 1889. This total is over 2 feet above our annual average of 39.74″, and is nearly as much rain as the previous 2 years combined of 67.3” (2016 + 2017).

“There were 24 days with at least 1” of rain, which is also a new record.

“Dulles International Airport and Baltimore Washington Airport also had record wet years with 66.74″ and 71.82” respectively.

IMO, since the Brainless Orange Turd in the Offal Office would likely throw a tantrum if they ever mentioned climate change, meteorologists here are avoiding their responsibility to educate the public (and the members of congress that also watch them). And no doubt because their corporate masters have told them to keep it quiet. (I wonder if Hitler and Mussolini would have kept the media from discussing climate change if it had been an issue back then?)

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

      -Joseph Goebbels

Yep, Goebbels is being channeled by Trump, Bannon, Alex Jones, Limbaugh, Mitch McConnell, etc., and the “base” Repugnants are falling in line and goose-stepping like “good Germans”. Thank gott our group is nowhere near as smart as Goebbels and Fox News has no Leni Riefenstahls on staff. (PS Shall we start a pool on when the Reichstag (ooops, the Capitol) gets torched? A government shutdown “that may last years” is heading us that way. That’s one way to get rid of the DemocRATS that won’t fund the wall. Forget “Lock Them Up!” BURN THEM OUT!

I will again tout two of the best books I have read in my 78 years. Highly relevant here.

BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY BURN AGAIN: DEMOCRACY, REBELLION, AND REVOLUTION, Ben Fountain, ECCO, 2018. An absolutely gorgeous book—the kind that makes you reread portions several times and take notes on and look up footnoted references (I’ve now got “American Amnesia” on hold). Fountain says we have had two big “burns” already—the civil war and the great depression—and that we have been heading into the third since Reagan. Trump is part of the progression into the third burn, and we will be lucky if it ends without blood in the streets.

AMERICA: THE FAREWELL TOUR, Chris Hedges, Simon & Schuster, 2018. Hedges is a near genius as an analyst and has written a disturbing and frightening book about how America may be in the end stages as a society. If reading it doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, you have no soul.

Fountain discusses how both the US and Germany faced similar problems in the 1930’s and does a great “compare and contrast” between how Roosevelt and the New Deal gave us a stronger America and truly MAGA while fascism and authoritarianism “burned” Germany and much of Europe to the ground.
