Same Sad Story of Mainstream Media Climate Coverage: Paralysis

November 28, 2018

In response to last week’s attempted burial of the National Climate Assessment, mainstream media sprung into action with the depressing-as-usual assortment of brainless talking head climate denialists presenting “the other side..”

With some bright spots, it’s still atrocious and unbelievable that a moron like Danielle Pletka, above, an AEI shill, could get anywhere near a purportedly serious discussion of hard science.

Katharine Hayhoe twitter Thread via Threadreader:

Let me share a sad reality. @AC360 asked if I could join them tonight or talk #NationalClimateAssessment. I just arrived at @TED, and I really need to practice my talk, I replied. Please! they said, we will send a car! Ok, I said. It’s important. I will do it. (story continues..)

I get my hair and make up done, we drive across the city, I do the interview, Anderson is lovely, the whole thing takes three hours …. and they don’t air the interview. Instead, they give more airtime to Santorum, so he can to continue to spread disinformation.

I don’t get paid for any of this – but I think he does, doesn’t he? And this is not the first time this has happened. Chris Hayes’ program canceled three times, once when I was literally in a chair with that earpiece in my ear. When @MSNBC called me again this week, I said…

… I would be delighted to talk to you, but in order to be a wise steward of my time, I need a guarantee the interview will air, barring a major disaster, an assassination, or the end of the world. They did not reply.

Please don’t get me wrong – I’m not whining or complaining. I am enormously grateful for any and all media who wants to talk climate, and equally grateful for the opportunity to do so. I talk to high school newspapers, Christian podcasts, and even sports blogs!

But time is the most precious resource we have, and there is not enough to go around – so when we choose how to spend our time, it just makes sense to be sure it will be used profitably and not squandered.

So twitverse, tell me: what wd YOU do with such requests in the future?

Here, on the plus side,  Anderson Cooper does address the attempt to bury the report on a Black Friday news dump.

So how about getting actual scientists on to answer these questions, guys?
As opposed to lying shills with no science background whatever?

Can’t find any words except that’s TERRIBLE!

The media clearly undermine the right of education.

The politics are aimed at ignoring and dismissing all the work and funds that went into the following extensive study. Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed the report is all based upon modeling which is a bold-face lie repeated over and over again.

  3. […] Considering the collective effort and review put into preparing this report, complete with a review by the National Academies, and a public comment period, you would think digital and visual media would spend more time on it. But no. […]

I’m sure there were downdrafts, as you pointed out, but I just did a quick scan of news outlets and sites and I don’t think they did too badly. Not representative, of course, and didn’t bother to check Fox News or The Financial Times.

These organisations make money by selling slots to advertisers. Make sure you let those advertisers allowing the businesses that host these pricks know they lost your business until they have pressured media to stop giving oxygen to liars!

Yikes – where does the citizen (not a scientist) get her facts from ?, fakenews-land ?

How about this finding folks also from citizens, but scientists. Maybe the changes mankind is making are so incredibly fast that old GAIA herself won’t notice and respond, yeah that’s it – I mean what could happen in the near future. Nah nothing bad, “deep time” my ass, the Earth is only 6000 years old, eh citizens.

“Scientists have succeeded in developing a new indicator (proxy) of ancient CO2 levels, using the organic molecule phytane, a debris product of chlorophyll. This new organic proxy not only provides the most continuous record of CO2 concentrations ever, it also breaks a record in its time span, covering half a billion years.

    . . . . . . . .

Present day levels are not unique, but the speed of these changes have never been seen before. Changes that typically take millions of years are now happening in a century. ”

Just worked out where the lady got her news – Maurizio Morabito (A.K.A omnologos) is still blogging – just not here anymore (thank god). The IT database programmer citizen (not a scientist) in London strikes again.

      • dumboldguy Says:

WHAT? Omnologos is still spouting his ignorant BS? There is no hope for mankind as long as mushrooms like Omno are given as much credibility as real experts.

    • Sir Charles Says:

Sure. CO2 levels were higher some 200 million years ago. But sea levels were also 200 metres higher that time.

      • ecoquant Says:

        @Sir Charles,

Y’don’t need to go back 200 Ma, just 3 Ma to 3.3 Ma. Indeed, 200 Ma is so far back tectonics weren’t the same, so it wasn’t really comparable to today.

There were some substantial differences even 3 Ma, but even considering that, conditions in comparison to today were severe: Atmospheric CO2 was 400 ppm, sea levels were 25 meters higher than today, and mean global temperatures +2C to +3C higher than today. The Arctic was torrid: +10C to +20C higher than today, with the tropics being about the same as today. Details are available: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1029/2008EO490001

  7. Here in the Netherlands things are much better. No roblem to find several 100 links over climate gange and related topics in the Meanstrean media.

  8. mboli Says:

So if you look at the GIS temps dataset, the one with world-wide land-sea monthly deviations going back to 1880, than Feb 2016 had the biggest anomaly. Do you know what that means?
It means TEMPERATURES ARE FALLING! I kid you not. Some popular press financial advice guy figured out that Feb to June 2016 was a 3 standard deviation fall in temperatures. He found a couple of other big differences in the also, starting from Feb 2016. And went on to explain that if these were all added up, there would be very little global warming.
(He didn’t explain the three standard deviation thing…was among all 4-month differences or what?)
So the deniers who read that far were now licensed to say that the NASA data is showing global warming maybe isn’t happening.
    But wait, there’s more!
Keep reading, and the financial advice guy asserts that he *isn’t* a denier. (Despite having jiggered a massive cherry pick a few paragraphs earlier.) He asserts he is concerned: why hasn’t the press reported these humongous temperature crashes? The always report the record highs. But a three-standard-deviation cooling event was simply ignored by the press. They are biased!
You can’t make this stuff up.
But denier financial advice columnists sure can. It occurred to me that this is his business: he looks at stock market data, and finds a way to mash-out some statistics which say to his public “buy” or “sell”, depending on how he is feeling that wek.
