    Kevin Anderson: “The severity of this hurricane and the severity of some of the other events that we’ve seen in recent years certainly has been exacerbated by issues of climate change, by our burning of fossil fuels. And the meteorologists should be making that clear link when they’re discussing these issues during the weather forecast within the U.S.”

    You all should write letters to your stations and tell them that!

    Kevin Anderson is professor of climate change leadership at the Centre for Environment and Development Studies at Uppsala University. He’s also chair of energy and climate change at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester in Britain.

    You cannot put additional energy into a system then expect the same (or lower) energetic response.

      Additionally the SST base line temperature for these powerful cyclones is 25 degrees. I don’t know the curve of increase (Kerry Emmanuel show the formula for theoretical maximum power) but with 25 degrees the SST base line then each additional degree will be highly significant.

        Aye, and the hurricane-temp water is extending deeper, meaning that even a slow-moving hurricane can keep pulling energy out of the sea.

      Don’t forget that wind force increases exponentially with wind speed. This rapid ramping up of wind speed due to the increased energy available makes storm surges higher and wind damage greater.
