Poll Reaffirms support for NASA’s Mission: Study Climate. Meanwhile, Former Denier Comes around..

July 12, 2018

Above, after months of running NASA, former climate denier Jim Bridenstine, to his credit, “got it” about climate science.

Says he did some reading and study. Huh.

Me too.

Most of us (understandably) associate NASA with rockets and space exploration, but the space agency also keeps an eye on our home planet. And it turns out the public is more supportive of NASA’s efforts to monitor Earth’s ever-warming climate than you might expect.

A new Pew survey released on Wednesday looked at how Americans view their beloved space agency six decades after its founding. The main takeaways are about what you’d expect: Most Americans think the U.S. should keep leading the world in space exploration, and most view the International Space Station (which the Trump administration is interested in turning over to the private sector) as a good investment.

But when asked to rate the importance of nine key space agency priorities, the survey gets more interesting. Sixty three percent of the 2,500 Americans polled said monitoring the Earth’s climate system should be a top priority for NASA, which gives this mission…drumroll…higher public priority than any other. In comparison, a scant 13 percent of Americans think going back to the Moon (a much-touted goal of the Trump administration) should be NASA’s top priority, and just 18 percent said getting boots on Mars (a key Obama-era aspiration) ought to be.

Climate monitoring even beat out monitoring dangerous asteroids as a top priority, albeit by a single percentage point. That’s right: NASA’s work on the notoriously hard-to-care-about subject of climate science is on par with asteroids in the public eye, despite the seemingly endless torrent of viral content broadcasting our impending doom from outer space

Partisan politics do play a role here. Only 44 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said monitoring Earth’s climate system should be NASA’s top priority (which ain’t nothing) compared with 78 percent of Democrats. This is no surprise: There’s a longstanding and deeply partisan divide on climate, and it shapes our thinking on just about everything related to it (well, except maybe clean energy).

Still, in an era where spewing climate denial is basically toeing party line for Republicans, the findings should offer some hope.

The warm temperatures that have scorched much of the US appear to be influencing Americans’ acceptance of climate science, with a new poll finding a record level of public confidence that the world is warming due to human activity.

A long-running survey of American attitudes to climate change has found that 73% of people now think there is solid evidence of global warming. A further 60% believe that this warming is due, at least in some part, to human influences.

Both of these findings are record highs in a twice-yearly survey that has been conducted by the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College since 2008. The latest poll was conducted during May, which was hotter than any May recorded in the contiguous US in 124 years of record keeping, according to the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, eclipsing the 1930s during the Dust Bowl era.

Actually, “monitor key parts of the Earth’s climate system” is the ONLY one that NASA should be doing right now. If we don’t get a handle on climate change soon, no one is going to give a rat’s ass about any of the others—-we’ll be too busy dying and burying each other to worry about things like whether a new “velcro” will be invented—-coffins are nailed shut.

I AM glad to see that the items came out in about the same order I would have prioritized them—IMO, the collective”we” got that part right.

Hmmm, let’s see. A nice post indicating that Bridenstine is not a total moron and that there is some hope for him providing leadership on climate change at NASA—-better than the situation at the EPA, where fossil fuel blatant crook has been replaced by fossil fuel quiet stooge.

Does it get the attention it deserves from Crockers? No, but it does get a Gish Gallop of crap from Sir Chucky, who appears to be gearing up for the midterms by going into full Russian Troll mode. SIX irrelevant comments from Chucky, all of them OT and unrelated to the topic at hand—-NASA.

As I said, Chucky is into busy sowing divisiveness and putting down America—-racism, crime in Germany, and beloved leader? JFC!

Why does an uneducated Irish bog-trotter comes onto a climate change site in the USA, contribute little of scientific value beyond giving us links to sites we already visit, and spend most of his time on anti-US rants? Aside from the fact that he is a narcissistic asshole who is allowed by Peter to get away with it, there is a strong likelihood that he IS a Russian Troll. DO remember that Putin has all that gas and oil to sell—-it’s the only thing keeping his kleptocracy alive—-and Good old Vlad is probably quite pleased with Chucky’s efforts to deflect, distract, and obfuscate.

If you asked Putin, he would say “Otlichnaya rabota, Charl’z!”

      • dumboldguy Says:

Since Chucky bordesr on brain-dead, there’s very little chance that he has enough functional “nerves” to craft an intelligent response to my comment, hence his non-response is understandable.

In fact, Chucky may not even be human—-he may be a Russian Troll-bot that is programmed to pick from a library of anti-American BS and inane insults rather than display any real thought.

        • Sir Charles Says:

You must love that Tramp liar, dumbo, as you’re precisely behaving like him.

          • dumboldguy Says:

Another nonsensical response from Chucky. If anyone here is “behaving like Trump”, it’s Chucky with his fifth grade level, virtually monosyllabic, have-to-get-the last-word-in bullshit.

Or maybe it’s just the Russian Troll bot picking out what it “thinks” is a suitable rejoinder from its library of anti-American bullshit. If so, it needs upgrading.

          • Sir Charles Says:

You shouldn’t smoke that much asbestos, trumpo…

=> Russian Asbestos Company Makes Trump Its Poster Boy

          • dumboldguy Says:

Smoke asbestos? Since asbestos is not flammable, it can’t be “smoked”. Another failed attempt at humor by Chucky, and of course an off-topic mention of Trump. These Russian Trolls are nothing if not consistent.

          • Sir Charles Says:

Although extremely resistant to high temperatures, smoke from a fire where asbestos is involved still represents a significant health risk because of the tiny particles of dust and fibre that are dispersed.

=> Safety issue caused by burning asbestos sheets

          • dumboldguy Says:

Nope. one burns and smokes TOBACCO, not asbestos, so this is still irrelevant. Are you ever going to get on topic?
