Tesla Shareholder Meeting is Upbeat

Tesla, for now, seems stable and moving forward on goals.

Tesla has consistently missed its production targets since deliveries of the Model 3 began last July. The first major snag was at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Reno, Nevada, where software defects caused robots to fail, meaning that thousands of cells had to be pieced together by hand. Production has steadily improved since then, and Musk told shareholders on Tuesday that the company is on track to meet its goal of 5,000 cars a week by the end of June.

Tesla says there isn’t any single problem slowing production down now. Instead, the heavy reliance on automation and new production methods have created a galaxy of smaller problems that must each be addressed individually. Musk’s claim is that once the process is tuned, the company will set a new standard for speed, precision, and scalability in manufacturing.

Assembly Putting together the pieces of the car’s body is an area that all automakers automate to varying degrees. However even state-of-the-art factories tend to rely on people to transport parts and load them onto the machines. Car parts are packed together for storage and shipping, and picking them back up is difficult without human fingers.

This is one area that Tesla may have gone too far, too fast. In April, Musk acknowledged that he had to rip out a complex conveyor system for parts and replace it with workers. Various robots throughout the line met a similar fate or had to be reprogrammed. Even so, Tesla says the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts.


Quality Control Tesla says it has 47 robots deployed in scanning stations throughout the body line. They measure 1,900 points in every Model 3 to match them to design specs—with a precision of 0.15 millimeters. Torque measurements are also automatically recorded for every bolt that’s fastened. During the final test drives on the track, sound recorders measure squeaks, rattles and wind and road noise that a test driver might miss. All of this data is stored with each car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so service centers can trace any issue back to a root cause in the factory. The idea is that Tesla will be able to improve its cars, even after they’re in a customer’s driveway.

    Yep, just like it’s quite likely we’ll have a colony on Mars one day.

        Of course not, since Musk would only have to do it for ONE week for you to win. Can he sustain it for a year and produce 250,000? Will you take that bet? Even if he did, it would barely double the number of EV’s being produced—from ~220k to 470K. BFD! More F-150’s are made every year.

        Besides, Musk is too busy selling flamethrowers and pushing his Boring Company tunnel ideas and thinking about Mars and….(pumping up his ego).

          It is a pretty BFD, actually. Tesla is seriously impacting the market. They are destroying the market share of the German automakers right in their labonza – upscale sports sedans. Who is making serious plans to compete with Tesla? Yup – the Germans.

          Elon Musk is doing exactly what he said he wanted to do. And that is NOT to dominate the world, or even the automotive market – it was to transform the automotive market away from fossil fuels. His overall goal is to help save the planet from AGW. Hence BEV’s. Solar panels. Batteries.

          Same goals as you and I. Yet, you hate him, minimize him, mock him.

          I do not get that, DOG.

            I don’t hate him, but until he stops BS-ing about Mars, and drilling tunnels from Baltimore to Washington and selling flamethrowers, and instead concentrates on EV cars and batteries, he’s just another egomaniac and con man who wants to put his hand in your pocket—-a distraction (and that’s not to detract from the good he DID do when he was focused on EV’s).

            What I don’t get is why YOU don’t see that he does as much if not more harm than good. My biggest gripe has always been his insane bullshit about colonizing Mars, which only plays into the hands of the deniers. Now NASA is jumping on the Mars bandwagon and testing a drone that is going to fly on a planet with almost no atmosphere? JFC!!! To continue to look for “evidence of life” on a dead planet? While we destroy all life here on Planet Earth? JFC again!

            And will you PLEASE look up the production and sales figures for vehicles in the USA?

            17,000,000+ million light vehicles per year—–only 200,000 of them EV’s (1/85 of the total) Why can’t you see the significance of those numbers?

    In the video one of the pundits remarked that Musk has “the gift of gab” and I nearly choked. Musk may have a good vocabulary, but if anything he stands out as someone whose improvements in public speaking include not stammering so much.

      Yet, for all his stammering, people listen to him. Every word, because what he says is truthful, cogent, and terse.

      As Spencer Tracy said in Pat and Mike:

      “Not much meat on her, but what’s there is ‘cherce'”

      I recently watched a video from a few years back, where an incredulous host asked him if he really believed solar power could make a dent in our energy needs. He said we could run the U.S. on a 100 square mile plot of solar. “No question” is what he said IIRC, and they were dumb-founded.

      Interestingly, that 100 sq. mi. estimate was based on PV panels having 10% efficiency. They are now pushing 25%.
