Pompeo: New Secretary of State is a Climate Denier Under Russian Cloud

Heavy Russian footprint in Trump administration, on both diplomatic and climate front.

Washington Post:

Mike Pompeo’s coming elevation to secretary of state would put an official who has expressed doubts about climate science in charge of the department tasked with representing the United State at a crucial upcoming international climate summit.

President Trump on Tuesday announced Pompeo would replace the outgoing Rex Tillerson, the former ExxonMobil CEO who supported the Paris climate agreement and agreed that greenhouse gases warm the planet and cause climate change. Tillerson called climate change an “engineering problem.”

If confirmed by the Senate, Pompeo would lead the department as it participates in a key international climate meeting in Katowice, Poland, in December.

In contrast to Tillerson, Pompeo said on C-SPAN in 2013 that “there are scientists that think lots of different things about climate change. There’s some who think we’re warming, there’s some who think we’re cooling, there’s some who think that the last 16 years have shown a pretty stable climate environment.”

That statement contradicts the scientific consensus on climate change, which has converged on the view that a strong ongoing warming trend is being caused by human greenhouse gas emissions. As a congressman, Pompeo also criticized the Paris climate agreement.

In his 2017 Senate confirmation testimony, however, Pompeo took a somewhat more moderate stand, saying that when it comes to the relationship between a changing climate and national security, the job of the CIA is to “understand threats to the world … to the extent that changes in climatic activity are part of that foreign intelligence collection task, we will deliver that information to you all and to the president.” But he added: “I frankly, as the director of CIA, would prefer today not to get into the details of climate debate and science, it just, it seems my role is going to be so different and unique from that.”

Environmental groups like the League of Conservation Voters have already begun to criticize the Pompeo appointment because of its climate-change implications.

“As climate realists like Tillerson depart, and ideologues like Pompeo replace them, the voices of flat out climate change denial are now completely ascendant at the top levels of the Trump administration,” said Paul Bledsoe, who advised the Clinton White House on climate change, in a statement on the development. “The President simply will not be hearing the facts from anyone.”

In January, Pompeo conducted mysterious meetings in Washington DC with the heads of Russian Intelligence agencies, including two individuals who are under current sanction either in the US or Europe.

CNN:

CIA Director Mike Pompeo did meet with the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, an official barred from entering the US under 2014 sanctions, as well as the head of Russia’s internal security agency, according to a US official with direct knowledge of the meetings.

The official said Pompeo did not meet with the head of the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency behind efforts to meddle in the 2016 US election. The CIA followed a multi-agency legal process to give access to Russian officials under sanctions, the official said.
CIA Director Mike Pompeo defended the meeting in a Thursday letter to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, declaring that he and other officials met with Russians for the same reason their predecessors did — “to keep Americans safe.”

Schumer, whose staff was briefed on the meetings and the legal process involved before giving a Tuesday news conference, said the meeting represented “a serious national security issue.” And he continued to blast Pompeo on Thursday.

The Russian Embassy in Washington announced the Pompeo meeting in a Jan. 30 tweet.
“It is no accident the Russians announced this meeting,” the US official said. “The target was sowing discord in US,” said the official, who also noted all administrations have met with Russian intel officials for intel-sharing and outreach.
The head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, SVR, Sergey Naryshkin, has been barred from entering the US since 2014 sanctions for Russia’s destabilizing activities in Ukraine were imposed. Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the FSB, the country’s internal intelligence service, has been sanctioned by the European Union.
National Observer:

By now it’s old news that the internet is full of Fake News, pumped into our social media channels by Russian trolls. But while the majority of our attention has been focused on whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election, the full extent of Russia’s meddling goes beyond electioneering. A report released last week by the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee outlines how a Russian internet company used Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to spread over 9,000 inflammatory, misinformation-filled posts about U.S. energy policy and climate change, attacking both liberals and conservatives alike.

While some of these memes are comically bad (who knew polar bears were scam artists?!) spreading misinformation into the climate change debate is all to real of an issue. According to the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, only about 70 per cent of American adults believe that climate change is happening, and only about half believe that global warming is caused by humans.

What makes the Russian memes so sinister is that they’re not directly aimed at turning environmentalists into deniers or vice versa (there’s actually plenty of pro-environment messaging in the mix), but rather their goal seems to be to create chaos.

Our President and much of the Republican party is hesitant to act to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and many refuse to even acknowledge the legitimacy that climate change is a real problem. It’s funny, but also it’s not funny.

What makes the Russian memes so sinister is that they’re not directly aimed at turning environmentalists into deniers or vice versa (there’s actually plenty of pro-environment messaging in the mix), but rather their goal seems to be to create chaos across the U.S. The report from the House Committee spells out that much of the propaganda is meant to simply “generate further domestic controversy surrounding the issue of climate change.” Essentially, just get a buch of dumb Americans yelling at each other.

France 24:

Russia’s Vladimir Putin said Thursday climate change was not caused by humans, as the White House announced that President Donald Trump would decide by May on continued US participation in the landmark Paris Agreement curbing global carbon emissions.
One day after visiting the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic, Putin claimed that icebergs had been melting for decades and suggested that global warming was not mankind’s fault.

“The warming, it had already started by the 1930s,” Putin said in comments broadcast from an Arctic forum held in the northern Russian city of Arkhangelsk.

“That’s when there were no such anthropological factors, such emissions, and the warming had already started.”

The Kremlin strongman added: “The issue is not stopping it… because that’s impossible, since it could be tied to some global cycles on Earth or even of planetary significance. The issue is to somehow adapt to it.”

Trump Replaces Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo at State; Torturer Named New Head of CIA

    – President Trump has ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and said he will replace him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo. Trump announced the news on Twitter this morning. He also said CIA’s deputy director Gina Haspel will be tapped to succeed Pompeo at the CIA. Both would need to be confirmed by the Senate. If confirmed Gina Haspel will become the first woman to head the CIA. Gina Haspel was directly involved in the CIA’s torture program under the George W. Bush administration.

She was responsible for running a secret CIA black site in Thailand where prisoners were waterboarded and tortured. We air President Trump’s remarks and highlights from Democracy Now! coverage on Pompeo and Haspel.

These are “businessmen” – what kind of business is run like this ?- the administration is becoming exactly like the twisted T.V reality show.

Sacked US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has warned of Russia’s “troubling behaviour and actions” in a parting statement after being fired by President Donald Trump.

He pointedly failed to thank Mr Trump or praise his policies.

Trump’s New CIA Nominee, Gina Haspel, Faces Possible Arrest Warrant in Germany over Torture

Wanna get really sick? Watch that:

On Tuesday morning, President Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson via Twitter. In the same tweet, the president announced CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who is a close ally of the Koch brothers, would be nominated to become the new secretary of state. Trump also tapped CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel to head the CIA. Haspel was directly involved in the CIA’s torture program under George W. Bush. She was responsible for running a secret CIA black site in Thailand in 2002 where one prisoner was waterboarded 83 times and tortured in other ways. Both Mike Pompeo and Gina Haspel must now face Senate confirmations, but barring any Republican defections, both can be confirmed without any Democratic support. Last year, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights asked German prosecutors to issue an arrest warrant for Haspel for her role in the torture program. For more, we speak with Wolfgang Kaleck, founder and general secretary of the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights.
