AUSTIN, Texas — Arnold Schwarzenegger’s next mission: taking oil companies to court “for knowingly killing people all over the world.”
The former California governor and global environmental activist announced the move Sunday at a live recording of POLITICO’s Off Message podcast here at the SXSW festival, revealing that he’s in talks with several private law firms and preparing a public push around the effort.
“This is no different from the smoking issue. The tobacco industry knew for years and years and years and decades, that smoking would kill people, would harm people and create cancer, and were hiding that fact from the people and denied it. Then eventually they were taken to court and had to pay hundreds of millions of dollars because of that,” Schwarzenegger said. “The oil companies knew from 1959 on, they did their own study that there would be global warming happening because of fossil fuels, and on top of it that it would be risky for people’s lives, that it would kill.”
Schwarzenegger said he’s still working on a timeline for filing, but the news comes as he prepares to help host a major environmental conference in May in Vienna.
“We’re going to go after them, and we’re going to be in there like an Alabama tick. Because to me it’s absolutely irresponsible to know that your product is killing people and not have a warning label on it, like tobacco,” he said. “Every gas station on it, every car should have a warning label on it, every product that has fossil fuels should have a warning label on it.”
He argues that at the very least, this would raise awareness about fossil fuels and encourage people to look to alternative fuels and clean cars.
He added, “I don’t think there’s any difference: If you walk into a room and you know you’re going to kill someone, it’s first degree murder; I think it’s the same thing with the oil companies.”
According to Arnold Schwarzenegger, like the T-800 will have a new mission in Terminator 6: Free Donald Trump from prison. Despite arriving late to his SXSW panel, Schwarzenegger had plenty to say, both about upcoming projects and President Trump. Of course, he and Trump have been seen fighting across various social media platforms about everything from gerrymandering to Trump’s Charlottesville speech, but this time it was the President who fired the first shot.
President Trump knocked the former Governor during his recent Pennsylvania speech when he stated, “Arnold Schwarzenegger failed when he did ‘The Apprentice,’ and he’s a movie star.” When asked about the dig, Schwarzenegger responded, “It’s very nice of him to call me a movie star. I never know really why the Russians make him say certain things. It’s beyond me.” However, the Trump bashing did not stop there. Schwarzenegger went on to talk about everything the president has promised vs. what he has actually accomplished. He capped it all off with a joke about his upcoming Terminator film.
Deadline reports that when asked for updates on T6, Schwarzenegger quipped, “The T-800 travels back to 2019 to get Trump out of prison!” Little is known about the actual script at this time, but it’s safe to say that Schwarzenegger wasn’t revealing an actual plot point here. Even still, it would make for a pretty interesting story – although we’re certain that the T-800 will have far more important business to attend to.

Schwarzenegger took a number of shots at Donald Trump, dismissing the president’s latest attack on him, delivered at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, for having “failed when he did the show,” a reference to the former governor’s rocky one-season stint as the host of “The Apprentice” on NBC last year.
“I never know really why the Russians make him say certain things,” Schwarzenegger said. “It’s beyond me. Why do you think he says those things? He’s supposed to be very busy.”

I’ve been saying for years that cars should come off the assembly line with ‘Driving kills’ emblazoned on all sides… though, I have to admit, for a slightly different reason…

The warning labels should be like cigarettes, with a number of different messages.
I vote for “Burning 1 gallon of gasoline discharges almost 200 pounds of CO2 into the air we all breathe—-CO2 is not good for the planet.”

The idea is good, but the number is wrong, dumbo. It’s 20 pounds of CO2, not 200. Still a lot concerning the 400 million gallons of gas burnt every single day in the US and A. Not to mention all the other fossil fuels…

Yep, you’re correct. My keyboard (or my tired old brain) is playing games again—-I intended to say “10 (TEN) gallonS”, because people can relate that to a fill up in a small car and it’s a round number, but lost the zero and the “s”—-apologies to all.
I have commented a number of times here on the unbelievable quantity of CO2 that results from burning gasoline—-an example I’ve used often is 300 pounds of CO2 from burning 15 gallons, and asked what people would do if they were required to also take a symbolic 300 pounds of feathers, popcorn, or sand (or 300 loaves of bread) to dispose of every time they filled up the tank.

Maybe he should stress that he’s a born-in-Austria—-ticks over there are known to carry TBE (tick borne encephalitis), a serious brain infection—-maybe he can metaphorically transmit that to US corporations and deniers and help accelerate their demise.

If they are killing billions of people, how could anyone be satisfied with a effing warning label?
Jesus H. Christ – this is not exactly like the tobacco industry. There are no emissions from gasoline – people put in their cars and burn it, knowing full well they are polluting the atmosphere. The resulting CO2 does NOT have a direct effect on the physical health of human beings, like tobacco smoke does. This is not a medical health issue.
Exxon is selling a legal product that people want and not a f***ing soul on the planet has been in the dark of the environmental consequences of their own personal actions for the past forty years. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have an entire government agency whose sole task is to regulate what goes into the atmosphere. I do not seem to recall them banning gasoline or heating oil, but maybe my memory is faulty. Anyone?
Prosecute them for their REAL crime against humanity – perverting science and democracy, with a deliberately untruthful propaganda and lobbying campaign that will result in the death and suffering of billions of people.
Or just drag them from their boardrooms and string them up – I would not be unhappy with that either.
But suing them for a warning label?!?

I disagree with you Roger. Reading a warning every day would definitely create more awareness. The double-edged sword: the industry could claim to have handed over the responsibility to the consumer.

I agree with this. Where I live it is now compulsory for cigarette packets to have plain packaging, a major warning of health consequences and graphic examples of the diseases that can result. It certainly has reduced (though not eliminated) smoking rates.
The difference I see it that although smoking is largely a personal choice and health problem, fossil fuel use affects everyone and the greatest impacts are likely to be on those that didn’t help cause the problem!

Well. Second hand smoke – or when a pregnant mother smokes – is also affecting others. Hence these warnings on the packages and the smoking ban in pubs and other public buildings.

It’s completely ineffective, and logically absurd, to think that you’re going to get billions of people to voluntarily on their own, cripple their lifestyle (energy is required for everything… EVERYthing) when one person, or even a billion person’s CO2 doesn’t amount to anything. It will take exactly a LAWSUIT to force EVERYONE. I’m as strongly pro-environment as anyone anywhere, but this is where I get really “ticked” at the Borg mentality of so many eco-friendlies – they have no understanding of how the human brain works. Swearing off of your gasoline car may do significant damage to your ability to nurture your family and yourself. It’s a big cost, and we all know it will do precisely ZILCH for the environment. Climate is global like nothing else is. Multiply by a million and it’s STILL ZILCH. It’s extremely counterproductive to climb on soapbox and finger-wag everyone for the high-carbon ways and expect them to change. All you do is turn people off, and vaguely get them angry – at YOU. What you should instead be doing is supporting legal action like this, and eliminating “Citizens United” and other mechanisms that put government law mechanism in the hands of the FFF industry (the last two FF’s are for “Fossil Fuel” – you can take your guess as the first F)

I agree. And I never proposed such a thing. In fact, much of what I say here is the opposite – that RE could save us all money and raise our standard of living and comfort. But perhaps you missed the dozens and dozens of posts where I said that?

No. I don’t support this legal action, because it doesn’t go anywhere near far enough. You want a warning label? Legislate it. (As if we need more awareness!)
You want to prosecute the Koch brothers, Exxon, etc? Great! But as I keep trying to point out – their crime is not selling gasoline. Any such suit will fail, as it should. Their crime, a true Crime Against Humanity, is killing billions with a propaganda and lobbying campaign – and for that they should go to prison or be executed. Not required to affix some effing warning labels.

That’s exactly what people are already doing. Nothing is going to cripple our lifestyles like another 3C’s of warming.
I thought that was one of the major reasons for switching energy sources – to protect our current lifestyles.

What economic disruption means is that once it gets cheap enough it takes over.
I put solar on my company roof with a 7-year lease till I own it and it saves money every bill until the seven years is up and electricity is free.
Just biding my time till electric vehicles are affordable. Above, the discussion has been about a different approach. Time till disruption of petrol and diesel about 7 years by my estimates.
It would be so much sooner as governments do there bit and support the transfer.
I wish the terminator the best but Id prefer a good Gov subsidy.
