Dunning-Kruger. In the Age of Fake News and Trumpism, This Cannot be Explained Enough

November 22, 2017

This week a flat earth believer will, he thinks, take off in a self designed rocket to “shut the door on this ball earth” nonsense.

Those with the least ability are the most likely to overrate their skills to the greatest extent.

Sound like anyone you know?

Good explainer, in particular because it points out the other half of the equation – experts in a given field are likely to forget that others do not have the same level of understanding – big barrier, for instance, to effective climate science comms.

I was watching a skeptic on youtube put down ‘this climate change nonsense’. He started by claiming that since he had done a ‘systematic’ study of climate change on the internet, he was a scientist, potentially a better scientist than one with a degree. He proceeded to link to some New Agey semi-religious stuff about how Earth was moving into a field of ‘greater energy’ that would quantum-leap evolution, which included articles about how the lost island of Atlantis has been found in Antarctica, and how the recent Las Vegas massacre was an inside job:

The assault on education and standards of knowledge is well underway. Anybody can now declare himself a scientist because he said so, and then point you to the guru who ‘opened his mind to the truth’. It’s a form of predation, and its not just Trump and the Russians who are engaged in it.

I’m way better at figuring out this “Dunning-Kruger” thing than the so-called expert in video. I have a natural talent for it.

The problem is self-evaluation in general.

People paying attention to how they’re driving are taking note that they are attentive drivers, but they don’t take note when they’re distracted, so must of what they remember about their driving is when they were driving well.

Outside evaluators is the only way to be sure.

You cannot be aware of that of which you are not aware. It makes perfect sense that people are blind to their own blind spots.
