  1. Sir Charles Says:

The year 2016 made history, with a record global temperature, exceptionally low sea ice, and unabated sea level rise and ocean heat, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Extreme weather and climate conditions have continued into 2017.

WMO issued its annual statement on the State of the Global Climate ahead of World Meteorological Day on 23 March. It is based on multiple international datasets maintained independently by global climate analysis centres and information submitted by dozens of WMO Members National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and Research Institutes and is an authoritative source of reference. Because the social and economic impacts of climate change have become so important, WMO partnered with other United Nations organizations for the first time this year to include information on these impacts. WMO also prepared an interactive story map to highlight some of the main trends and events in 2016.

“This report confirms that the year 2016 was the warmest on record – a remarkable 1.1 °C above the pre-industrial period, which is 0.06 °C above the previous record set in 2015. This increase in global temperature is consistent with other changes occurring in the climate system,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

“Globally averaged sea surface temperatures were also the warmest on record, global sea levels continued to rise, and Arctic sea-ice extent was well below average for most of the year,” he said.

“With levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere consistently breaking new records, the influence of human activities on the climate system has become more and more evident,” said Mr Taalas.

A haunting tune – I learnt a long time ago you can appreciate music (and dance) in languages (and cultures) you don’t understand anywhere and anytime on our planet. Maybe it’s because we originated from the the same source, shared our roots before spreading out. Thanks for putting it up Mr. Sinclair. And great responses from Sir Charles. Our local T.V weather forecaster mentioned the “World Meteorological Day on 23 March” during his slot yesterday. Unfortunately he did not mention the grave, spine chilling news about the record global temperatures of 2016 – 2017. Just read about that in under-read and specialized Science and Environment columns, in the rare and specialized concerned media outlets. What’s up with peoples curiosity and media outlets. ? Don’t they realize the consequences or are they too terrible to acknowledge. I just don’t know and am struck speechless.

  3. Don’t they realize the consequences or are they too terrible to acknowledge.

    I think it’s both.

I know that since the election of the Orange Spoiler, I’ve been paying less attention to climate, not because I don’t care, but because I care too much, and now, I’m really frightened by the idea that we are going to arrive at a point of no return because the sociopathic moron that is now our sitting president doesn’t care at all.

  4. Paul Whyte Says:

To give another perspective on the Orange spoiler that is hanging fowl in the Whitehouse. Its never been so clear how the economic system works.

The form of the manufacture of mass delusion that is used to gain elected office has also never been so clearly visible.

The degree of clarity needed to actually and quickly turn around climate change is very high. currently any sensible president could only slow climate change a little due to the control exerted by the fossil fuel industries on most of the worlds governments in keeping the needed level of clarity obscured.

While we only have of the order of 15 years or so to bring coal use to an end before the future of advanced civilisation its unlikely It has taken the last 150 years to load up the worlds carbon dioxide buffers to the point they are at now that is so perelous. For all this time since has been clear that the sun down of fossil fuels is needed for the long term future.

At this point the creature that has the best possibility of turning things around is an international peoples movement to end fossil fuel use. This is building currently. While the Orange spoiler is frustrating to watch, the real effort that needs to be placed is on rapidly building the above movement.

Seeing the reflection of the needed change in the face of the Orange spoiler is unlikely and I think that he is a distraction.
