Mike Pence: The Whore on Coal

October 5, 2016

Mike Pence’s frequent shout outs to the 19th century were meant to galvanize the rural Pennsylvania and Ohio base, the undereducated, ignorant, and angry demo that his ticket hardly needs to energize.

Hardly a dog whistle, it was a proud affirmation of loyalty to Big Fossil, and absolute fealty to ignorance.

Washington Post:

But the most glaring example of damning subtext that will get the least attention was in Pence’s repeated attacks on Obama and Clinton for the “war on coal,” a term that the Indiana governor used conspicuously five times. What that term really implies is that the federal government should not fight climate change. Kicking coal is at the center of any good climate strategy, because there is no reasonable way to keep burning large amounts of the dirtiest fossil fuel and respond to scientists’ warnings that the world must dramatically cut carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon capture and other technologies that could make coal “clean” have proven themselves extremely expensive relative to other options. Coal country simply must transition.

trumpcoal2

The term also implies factual illiteracy — or disinterest in reality — on the part of those who use it. U.S. coal consumption has dropped not just because of the Obama administration’s climate agenda. Coal country was hit hard long before the president’s Clean Power Plan was finalized. The fracking boom produced a massive, steady supply of cheap natural gas, which has out-competed coal. Despite their rhetoric, Trump and Pence could not rescue coal country from that economic reality without some sort of massive and counterproductive government intervention.

Pence’s “war on coal” line was a play for votes in rural Pennsylvania and Ohio. It was also utter nonsense. Perhaps a debate moderator will finally attempt to pin the GOP ticket down on climate change one of these days — instead of allowing Trump and Pence to let silence and deflection continue doing so much of the talking.

After looking at that campaign piece from the ’90’s, I would suggest that you add “demented, deluded, ignorant, science-illiterate, and downright stupid” in front of the word “whore” in the title of this piece.

I had thought that Pence was a smart choice for VP by the Repugnants because he at least had some creds and a more normal haircut and demeanor than the Orange Pig—-it turns out that he is just a “plastic man” that looks good on the outside but is nothing but a parrot for right-wing bullshit and lies

Coal is a “natural mineral”?. So naturally, we burn it?

“Greenhouse gases are real, but are MOSTLY the product of volcanoes, HURRICANES, and freakin’ UNDERWATER GEOLOGICAL DISPLACEMENTS”? WTF is he talking about?

I have now lost nearly all respect for Pence. I’m going to go look under the mattress and see if I can find some more $$$$ to send off to the Dems.

  3. Robert Ely Says:

I have found the best way to disarm climate change deniers is to always have a few “Keeling curves” in my pocket. Show them how the concentration of CO2 increases every year without fail. Ask them to prove that it is not a problem, and give them a Keeling Curve to take away with them to contemplate.

    • Yep, this will work brilliantly. Up until the point where ……

      – the “denier” in question points out in great detail that he/she and skeptic climate scientists do not deny that human activity has some influence in climate
      – the “denier” in question points out how the topic is not about “climate change” (meaning the potential for a change to a colder climate) but is misnamed that way to mask the wipeout with tagging it as “global warming”
      – the “denier” in question points out how Keeling’s compatriot scientist Roger Revelle recanted his views on CO2-induced global warming
      – the “denier” in question points out the graph on 18+ years of no surface-level warming, along with pointing out whatever faults arise with smears of the graph, surface temperature measurement methodologies, atmosphere fingerprints (or lacks thereof), Lord Monckton, etc
      – the “denier” in question points out the necessity of the RRS Ernest Shackleton icebreaker accompanying that cruise ship that just went through the NW passage at the height of the Arctic ice summer minimum
      – the “denier” in question points out the situations where sea level rise is blamed when there is irrefutable and routinely ignored instances of land area subsidence
      – the “denier” in question points out (if the argument devolves this way) that he/she is not only not a paid shill of ‘fill-in-the-blank’ enemy, but that the person with all the “Keeling curves in my pocket” has literally no hopes of pointing anyone to evidence at Desmogblog, ExxonSecrets, etc proving the accusation true.

Watch this confrontation occur in front of an crowd otherwise disinterested in global warming, and you end up with them muttering, “wow, I never heard about that other stuff in the news / at college / in “X” web site / from that old guy who is always going on and on about it. I thought this was a done deal.”

GIVE.IT.UP. Russell. JFC!! Your constant parroting of the bullshit talking points from your “Handbook For Climate Denial Trolls and Whores for Fossil Fuels” impresses NO ONE here, particularly since you yourself have admitted that you know NO science and can’t explain the science behind even 1% of the bullshit you spew.

You can give the note below to your Uncle Fred Singer at Heartland to justify your whore’s pay for this piece.

        “Dear Fred,
This is to certify that Russell Cook, that science-ignorant moron that you give a “strings-free grant” to so that he can whore on the web for fossil fuels, has indeed earned his whore’s dollar today by commenting on a Climate Crocks thread. And at least one of us has responded to him, if that’s also necessary for him to be paid. We at Crock are glad to help Russell earn his whore’s dollars from Heartland, and are glad that you are dumb enough to pay him. If you didn’t, he would probably be back in his mother’s basement and sucking $$$ from the public coffers, thereby increasing our taxes”

“the “denier” in question points out the graph on 18+ years of no surface-level warming…”

Wow. You do realize you have a mental illness, RC? I’m serious – get help.

        • Gingerbaker, please do indulge the reading population here: what are your credentials in psychological analysis? Meanwhile, are you abysmally aware, that if you offered the above swipe at me while standing next to the above-mentioned person with all the “Keeling curves in my pocket” in front of the crowd otherwise disinterested in global warming, that folks in the crowd might say, “Did you see that? Is that all the guy has, he didn’t even try to dispute the 18 year graph thing?!”

Think about it from the world-view picture, the face of modern environmentalism are people who yell “shut up!!!” when faced with any detailed criticism, a movement which does not welcome or seek to interact with doubters of any description, but instead strives to indoctrinate fence-sitters while punishing anyone who dissents from the orthodoxy. Is your response not something which adds to this appearance?

(Meanwhile, imagine a note from Peter Sinclair to “d.o.g.” on a requirement for maintaining commenting privileges: “Keep it clean, bro.”)

          • Lionel Smith Says:

So tell us Russell, about the relevant graph that shows there has been no warming for 18+ years.

It has been explained to you ad infinitum and one here has challenged you on this getting on for twenty times now only for you to vanish until your next hit and run spraying denial points around like Uzi shot.

That is sure a sign of mental disturbance.

          • dumboldguy Says:

My credentials in psychological analysis are likely far better than GB’s, and we do agree—-GB is a smart guy who can look at a skunk and smell that skunk and conclude that is is in fact a skunk and not a pussy cat. That’s true for ALL the Crockers, Russell—-you are an unwelcome stinky striped critter that is NOT going to get petted here.

Nice use of language with “abysmally aware”, however you thought those two words went together, but YOU are definitely “abysmally UNaware” that “the 18 year graph thing” has been thoroughly debunked and is only found in the Denier’s Handbook—it is NOT legitimate science. Of course you have no science background and are in denial about the fact that the temperature over the past two years has been skyrocketing also, so I can understand your willful ignorance about “the graph”. (Don’t recall if I have used this term here, but when it comes to things science, Russell is a WIFI—a Willfully Ignorant Functional Idiot)

Yes, Russell, you would like to keep that “world view” of yours going—the one where you maintain there are people who offer “detailed criticism” and are sincere “doubters” of climate change. NO such animals exist.

The “face of modern environmentalism” is getting quite tired of the liars and whores like you that would deny the science and all the irrefutable evidence of CAGW that confronts us just so you can make your whore’s dollars—-that’s the majority view of those of us who are educated enough to understand what’s happening. I will say it again, Russell—GIVE.IT.UP—-get a real job.

(And as far as keeping it clean—-GFYS, Russell. If this were my site you would have been gone long ago, since you are one of the “filthiest” people to ever comment here)

        • addledlady Says:

Regardless of mental or any other illness, one useful thing RC could do would be to consult an optometrist.

If you can’t see straight, then thinking straight gets even harder.

      • Torsten Says:

On September 14, Russell wrote “Gish gallop / obfuscate is not what I or skeptics do…” here:

        https://climatecrocks.com/2016/09/06/ice-melt-season-draws-to-ragged-close/#comment-86271

And now he serves up another one.

“the “denier” in question points out in great detail that he/she and skeptic climate scientists do not deny that human activity has some influence in climate”

        How much is some?

“the “denier” in question points out how the topic is not about “climate change” (meaning the potential for a change to a colder climate) but is misnamed that way to mask the wipeout with tagging it as “global warming””

You sure like to call things you don’t understand a “wipeout”. IPCC founded in 1988. You know what the “CC” part stands for? And what has mean global surface temperature done since then?

“the “denier” in question points out how Keeling’s compatriot scientist Roger Revelle recanted his views on CO2-induced global warming”

He didn’t. Google is your friend.

“the “denier” in question points out the graph on 18+ years of no surface-level warming, along with pointing out whatever faults arise with smears of the graph, surface temperature measurement methodologies, atmosphere fingerprints (or lacks thereof), Lord Monckton, etc”

Your ineptitude and wilful ignorance are on full display here. Well done. (See another example of Russell’s inability to understand charts here:

        https://climatecrocks.com/2016/09/06/ice-melt-season-draws-to-ragged-close/#comment-86272

“the “denier” in question points out the necessity of the RRS Ernest Shackleton icebreaker accompanying that cruise ship that just went through the NW passage at the height of the Arctic ice summer minimum”

Chartering that ship for icebreaking service was prudent, and perhaps a requirement set by authorities. The ship had no trouble reaching Beechy Island or the head of Croker Bay, which were both side trips on the most northerly part of the voyage. Images from the blog show only the glacial ice at the head of Croker Bay.

        Blog: https://my.yb.tl/CrystalSerenity

However, RSS Ernest Shackleton served admirably in taking on the Crystal Serenity’s garbage (really).

“the “denier” in question points out the situations where sea level rise is blamed when there is irrefutable and routinely ignored instances of land area subsidence”

And here Russell shows his ignorance of the relevant literature, or simply cherry picks a superficial argument to impress the uninformed. The best, non-subsiding coastal sea level records demonstrate a consistent global rise when the redistribution and gravitational effects of land ice are taken into account.

“the “denier” in question points out (if the argument devolves this way) that he/she is not only not a paid shill of ‘fill-in-the-blank’ enemy, but that the person with all the “Keeling curves in my pocket” has literally no hopes of pointing anyone to evidence at Desmogblog, ExxonSecrets, etc proving the accusation true.”

No need to go there, as anyone reading your website can figure out why you were given money by Heartland, claims of no strings attached notwithstanding.

“Watch this confrontation occur in front of an crowd otherwise disinterested in global warming, and you end up with them muttering, “wow, I never heard about that other stuff in the news / at college / in “X” web site / from that old guy who is always going on and on about it. I thought this was a done deal.”

In your dreams. You seem to have a strange fantasy about these arguments being settled by some sort of live debate. Too bad your fantasy requires the Gish Gallop.

        • dumboldguy Says:

Well said—-glad you found the time and energy to respond to Russell. His Gish Gallops are very tiring to read, and so is the rational thinking and science facts needed to refute them—-I’m now going for my afternoon nap.

“Mike Pence: The Whore on Coal”

I know it gets heated during campaign season, but comparing Pence to whores is demeaning and hitting below the belt. For whores, that is.

  5. Pence is also a hard-right lunatic.
