Was 2012 a Warm up for 2016?

April 13, 2016

There are a lot of reasons that pollsters believe opinions in the US have swung decidedly in favor of urgent action on climate change.

By my reading, 2012 was the year things got real, and I made a couple videos talking about it.  The one above is least well known. Look for footage from Cloverfield.

2012 brought a cascade of extreme events which persuaded large numbers of Americans that climate was changing, and humans have something to do with it – and about it.

2016 has global temps shooting to unprecedented levels, record low arctic ice, and record early start for Greenland melt season, so far. La Nina on deck.

If 2012 is any kind of model for a year of extremes, climate could become a defining issue in this election.

Below, one of my most popular vids, “Welcome to the Rest of our Lives”.

Full Cloverfield movie trailer here for ambience.

The most enraging, maddening sickening, disgusting, outrageous, mind blowing thing is that all of this was projected (yes projected – not predicted), over 45 years ago in the year of 1968 by the Stanford Research Institute in a report to the oil authorities. Can you imagine the reaction of the people of the sixties if they had known, it was a time of protest and there was plenty of wrong things to protest back then, but this caps it all. Sorry finger trouble coupled with raging anger, retyped using word processor, wish I could be more eloquent . .

The most enraging, maddening sickening, disgusting, outrageous, mind blowing thing is that all of this was projected (yes projected – not predicted), over 45 years ago, during the year of 1968 by the Stanford Research Institute in a report to the oil authorities. Can you imagine the reaction of the people of the sixties if they had known ?, it was a time of protest and there was plenty of wrong things to protest back then, but this caps it all (except for the evil racism of the times) . The threat of nuclear annihilation is dwarfed by the threat of abrupt climate change. The bastards withheld the science from the public, all for a pocket full of gold, how callous, calculating and cold is that. Over 100 persons have just died through heatstroke in India (during the first week of April), the monsoon (if it even arrives) is not due until June, how usual is that ? How usual are the massive global coral reef die offs. How usual is the Arctic ice melts and temperatures. And sadly during this time we have all been good and respectful consumers. And still we are all mainly silent consumers. What happened to us, has the successive advertising campaigns and slick consumerism brainwashed us all ?

“The Stanford Research Institute presented a report to the American Petroleum Institute (API) in 1968 that warned the release of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels could carry an array of harmful consequences for the planet.
The emergence of this stark advice follows a series of revelations that the fossil fuel industry was aware of climate change for decades, only to publicly deny its scientific basis.
“Significant temperature changes are almost certain to occur by the year 2000 and these could bring about climatic change,” the 1968 Stanford report, found and republished by the Center for International Environmental Law, states. “If the Earth’s temperature increases significantly, a number of events might be expected to occur including the melting of the Antarctic ice cap, a rise in sea levels, warming of the oceans and an increase in photosynthesis.
“It is clear that we are unsure as to what our long-lived pollutants are doing to our environment; however, there seems to be no doubt that the potential damage to our environment could be severe.”
The study, written by scientists Elmer Robinson and RC Robbins, adds that accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere could cause “serious worldwide environmental changes”.
The scientists estimated that CO2 in the atmosphere could reach 400 parts per million by 2000. In fact, CO2 levels broke that milestone last year, recording their largest leap on record. “

2012 was the year deniers doubled/ trebled & quadrupled down on fake skepticism.

Before that year, they were full of “the Great Arctic Ice Recovery”, yet with the extent and area minima that year, they hardly missed a step in proclaiming the New Recovery starting in 2013.

This has happened again in the current year with the end of the fake “paws”.

With each doubling down on denial, they lose some conviction and credibility. Its a diminution by attrition.
