Bogus Factoids not New in American Politics

February 10, 2016

The movie was “Joe” in 1970, and it made Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon famous.

One of the key lines was revealing in that it shows how right wing invented “facts” are not a new feature of American politics – they’ve just been turbo-boosted by the Fox News echo chamber.  In an updated version, the character would more likely be saying, “The world hasn’t warmed in 18 years. Ted Cruz has the satellite data.”

The left invents factoids all the time as well. Pretending only one group does that is a disservice to the American people.

Ahhhh ‘Joe’, I remember that (under appreciated) movie well. I’ve seen it a half dozen times.
The interesting thing is that the character of Joe starts out like a typical, comical, Archie Bunker style of loudmouth that will seem very, very familiar to those acquainted with the Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck kind of folk, but slowly starts to show his true colors and darker nature as the film progresses.
That is what scares me the most about these people and their followers. We cannot let our guard down thinking that they are nothing more than circus clowns that could never get elected, or if they were, they would never be as bad as their rhetoric.
    The movie ends badly…very badly.
