Watch This: Vice Media on Antarctic Melt

March 13, 2015

Vice Media went to Antarctica with NASA scientists, including Dr. Eric Rignot, well known to readers of this blog.
This is the best mass media explication of Antarctic melt I’ve ever seen. Hats off to Vice News for this.

Not sure how long this will be on line, so take a look. 42 minutes long.

Joe Bast is to climate science as Ken Ham is to evolution

Awesome, brilliant, shocking and a very realistic state, portrayed in this balanced video. We have advanced tremendously in the last century burning fossils, but now the heavy cost is too apparent. We must undergo a huge shift in the way we do things in the near future and we are running out of time. Lots of people are going for it, we can only support and encourage the efforts for the future of mankind and co-inhabitants of this planet.

Have found this: Our Rising Oceans: VICE on HBO Debrief (Episode 1) will be looking for more.

Excellent piece of work—-dramatic, even exciting, and understandable. Well worth watching.

I’m sorry that Dr. Box wasn’t there when the “holy shit” comment was brought up—-he might have added “Yep, and we’re more fucked than we we were when I last said it”.

The Bangladesh scenes were sad—-if some poor woman in the slums can see that “There is no future”, why can’t we? Why are we burdened with Inhofes, Rubios, and their ilk?

(And Biden was sounding very “presidential”—-excellent comments from him).

    • MorinMoss Says:

Rignot is the scariest character because the way he speaks almost sounds nonchalant and he says what to me are the most frightening things in an offhand manner.

So if you’re mostly paying attention to his cadence & manner, it doesn’t sound so bad, until his words sink in.

Can you imagine him as a doctor, giving bad news to people ?

“Er, well, I know you thought this was going to cost a toe or two but we’re well past that now. So, maybe a leg, and an arm below the elbow, nothing more than this – this time.”

  6. VICE seems to have put up its own OPEN ACCESS copy at:

    Watching it now.

    • anotheralionel Says:

Still not available for moi, sadly.

      • Where are you located? I just got done watching it and VICE put it up. (Shows will sometimes make the first episode of a season openly available as a way of enticing people into watching the rest of the series, even if this means subscribing to a given cable channel. This seems to be one of those cases. But I know that oftentimes one show or another (e.g., BBC programs openly available to the Brits over the net, or videos out of Israel) will be restricted to audiences in their own countries based on viewer IP addresses.

        Anyway, write me at: timothychase@gmail.com

  7. THE VIDEO BEGINS WITH STATIC but just continue watching. Within half a second or so the static disappears and the video begins. Somebody is just being artsy.

Also, the link I gave is the same as what Peter Sinclair gave. It isn’t going to disappear as the video was put up there by the producers themselves as a means of introducing you to their program.

  8. This is one (1) episode which HBO should release for free to the major network TVs for re-broadcast. The message of climate change is that important.
