Last week Pope Francis stood up for a scientific world view, including defending evolutionary biology (that is, uh, well ..biology) and the importance of a planetary life support system.  Here’s more discussion.

I love the smugness with which some people spout their theories of “the world according to them” and maunder on about materialism versus dualism. There is “only matter and energy” and “no spiritualism”?.

Yep, I agree with that, but have to ask where did that matter and energy come from? And where did all the “laws of nature” come from that allowed that matter and energy to interact and give us the universe we see today? (Including the “miracle” of life on Earth).

There may actually be a “god” out there that snapped his mental fingers and made it all happen many billions of years ago. One so powerful that he could “create” in an instant a self-sustaining system and “plan” that would go on for billions of years and lead us to today. If he exists, he likely moved on to other things long ago and doesn’t give a rat’s rear end about “humans” in spite of all our self-serving efforts to “glorify” him and “his works”. Religion is a con game and the bible is useful for putting under a short leg on a table to make it level—all this science vs. religion yada-yada-yada is just something we do to avoid boredom.

(I once said in a Crock comment that our entire universe is nothing more than a cheap program on some kid’s Game Boy in some larger universe, and that the kid has a low IQ and likes to torture small animals. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it).
