Except Congress – GOP Edging Away from Climate Denial Crazy

June 30, 2014

Dipping their toes in the sanity pool.
Hey guys, the water’s fine.

Rising. But fine.

I came across a recent example of very pure congressional climate paranoia porn in this vid from a Sara Palin wannabe running in Louisiana.
Watch if you dare, but put down hot liquids first, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.

HOLY HORSEPUCKY, Greenman! This Looney Lenar clip defines the meaning of the term “batshit crazy”. Thanks for the “hot liquids” warning—it was warranted.

And what’s crazier is that she is from Houma LA and represents that area in the LA legislature. Houma is in Terrebonne Parish south of New Orleans and is “Hurricane Central”—-it has gotten hammered by Katrina, Isaac, Andrew, and many other storms, and was hard hit by the BP oil spill. A very few feet of sea level rise and it will be gone.

If anyone should be concerned about sea level rise, extreme weather, and oil spills, it should be Looney Lenar and her constituents. I guess we should be thankful that Cuba can’t be seen from LA, so we won’t be treated to any Palin-like foreign policy expertise about when the Cubans are going to invade us.

PS I kid you not, but there is a Youtube clip about Lenar titled “Over the Edge”, and it’s not about her mental state, but about her repelling down a 300+ foot tall building in support of a child adoption initiative in LA. (Or does that also speak to her mental state?)

I dunno. I think it was a well crafted piece of denier propaganda.
She hit all the hot buttons and confirmation biases of the target audience.
We need to be careful not to underestimate these savvy candidates, despite the fact that they are (to us) spouting verifiable nonsense and pseudo-scientific talking points and lies.
I personally know people who eat this crap up, and are in fact energized by it,much the same way that I get a boost when Jon Stewart and The Daily Show crew nail Faux News et al in a particularly resonant (to me) way.

Yes, very well-crafted indeed—-if you believe telling bald-faced lies and sowing FUD is one definition of “well-crafted”. She may be speaking to her ignorant constituency in the backwaters of a backward state, and have next to no chance of getting elected anyway, but somebody has paid some good $$$ for this five minute ad (the Kochs and LOGA—-LA Oil and Gas Assoc?—who have endorsed her), and they’re doing it all over the country. That’s one reason we’re still seeing so much confusion and FUD over climate change—-the flood of horsepucky from the fossil fuel interests, which IS carefully constructed to appeal to the mindless.

  2. According to the Spring 2014 Yale Politics and Global Warming Poll about 31% of conservative Republicans support regulating coal power plant CO2 emissions and 43% support reducing carbon emissions. This is a significant improvement. Unfortunately, conservative Republicans are a more motivated 26% of the electorate than other segments.

Would you be more or less likely to vote for a congressional or presidential candidate who strongly supports action to reduce global warming?
    More likely 45%
    Less likely 17%

Would you be more or less willing to vote for a congressional or presidential candidate who strongly opposes action to reduce global warming?
    Less willing 44%
    More willing 15%

Should America take unilateral leadership action to reduce carbon emissions?
    All registered voters 62%
    Democrats 75%
    Liberal Democrats 84%
    Moderate Republicans 57%
    Conservative Republicans 43%
    “Independents” 53%

One month prior to Whitney’s video:

“Sources say the majority of the early donors are independent oil producers and physicians.”

I too saw things like that when “researching” Lenar. One of them said the race for that seat is so crowded that she ranks in 8th or 10th place at present. The LOGA support I understand, considering her stance on fossil fuels and AGW, but I don’t know why the doctors like her so much (unless it’s because she doesn’t like Obamacare).
