Dark Snow: Dr. Marek Stibal Sampling On the Greenland Sheet

June 19, 2014

Dr. Marek Stibal travelled with Dark Snow Project last year as our biology expert. Dr. Stibal’s field of study is the biome, or web of life, chiefly microorganisms, living on the ice sheet.  The video above was shot on June 24, 2013, not far from the Illulisat glacier front. No editing, just a slice of us trying to get our bearings in the first hop up to the ice last year.

A key area of focus for the Dark Snow Project is to understand the degree to which living algae and microbes may be darkening the ice sheet. More on this in upcoming videos, but if you have not yet read Dr. Stibal’s post here, do so now.

I expect to be working with Dr. Stibal and Dr. Box in August, when I take my shift at Dark Snow 2014.  Looking forward to his humor, curiosity, insights and good companionship.

I’d like to know a little more info in / about the clip.

Are the results in and what are the implications here?

Not a bad office you’ve got there, Dr. Marek Stibal! (Although no doubt a wee bit chilly!)
