I hope future generations will forgive for our ignorance.

Jane,
I think what is on display is not so much ignorance as arrogance.
As in “the arrogance of willfully ignoring reality”.
An old proverb has it that you cannot awaken a man who is pretending to be asleep.
I think this is quite an apt description of most Americans who are also well described by this Winston Churchill quip: “Occasionally he stumbled over the truth, but hastily picked himself up and hurried on as if nothing had happened.”

Belated Happy Fall from Denver. Yesterday 9/23 our high temperature was 88 degrees. The old record was 90 last set in 1905. The skies are hazy from western wildfire smoke. Today brings a little snow to the mountains and more may be on the way, but it’s very dry here. The governor signed a bill allowing an exemption for farmers carrying oversized loads of hay and alfalfa for livestock. As I’ve been telling colleagues. No matter what next summer’s weather brings, watch your grocery bill shoot for the stars.
