Dust That Sings

April 8, 2012

I don’t belong to any religion. Not so much because I rule out that there is an ultimate truth or ground of being, I rather suspect there is, –  but more because, like Groucho, I don’t want to belong to any club that would have me as a member. Also, I’m not very good at showing up at the same time every week.

I go along with Einstein –

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”

And I would add, with Whitman, that I have no need of miracles. “I know of nothing else but miracles..”
..“A mouse is miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels…”

Whoever put the video above together seems to have touched on that – as does Richard Feynman in the video below.

Enjoy this beautiful day, no matter what the weather, and celebrate it, no matter what your persuasion.

  1. Terrific videos. I want to watch the first one every morning at the start of my working day. Genuinely inspiring. Thanks for posting them.

Hah, I like the Feynman video. Anytime I have heard him speak, I have this impression that he was incredibly smart and well spoken, yet at the same time he has that vocal quality of an every-man, an always honest friend.

    Good stuff.

  3. I speculate that any plausible Creator of the Universe, with the inclination and power to grade human beliefs, would assign these expressions of sublime reverence an A+.

  4. Now these are Easter Eggs I can get into. Thanks Peter!

  5. The sad thing is the bible tells its followers to do all the things the first video try’s to discourage. And when so many people think that time is set by God, they cant help but say the earthquake or tsunami was the will of God. Sad I know, but something we are going to have to understand and despise.

  6. The bible is interpreted a million different ways by a million different religions, I laugh at people that assume to know what the “bible tells its followers”
There is some arrogance in people who distain religion when they have not made an effort to read the bible themselves or pray, but I am sure most of these types pray like hell when they have a car crash and are sitting next to their child on a hospital bed. Then you have those who simply base there judgement on the hypocrisy of mainstream religions they encounter which is a lazy copout when you consider that the roman catholic religion did not even promote “the bible” in fact they burned it at one point . The bible got one thing right the world is full of hypocrites who do not care about the poor or anything else but themselves.. this is why we have global warming because of the selfish way we treat each other and the environment. True religion stands for what is right and when the going gets tough it does not falter.
I think the blanket criticism of the right wing politicized religion in the Global Warming topic is rather pointless. I also disagree with the connection of evolution and global warming as being some sort of connected topic. I think these 2 topics are about as different as you could get.
