Solar Parking Canopy

Imagine these in every mall parking lot in the US.

This is a long-overdue idea, especially for the USA with so many parking lots, so many large, flat roofs on commercial buildings and so many very sunny places – where the air conditioning gets cranked up and the power demand soars, just when solar irradiance is highest.

If, 10-20 years ago, this was the path chosen, and there was less emphasis on wind farms, America would be the solar powerhouse and the grid, and the economy, would be the better for it.

A road not taken – but it’s not too late.

Got own of my own that’s a modest 30ft by 50ft. It’s just big enough to park some farm equipment under, and produce enough power to thumb our noses at the power company.

This article is totally unfair to extremist Republican and Christian investments requiring job-killing insurance –

“Reactor at Illinois nuke plant shuts down after power loss” (By Michael Winter, USA TODAY; content.usatoday.com, 1/30/12).

“Small earthquake causes no problem for Virginia nuke plant”; Reuters; cnbc.com, 1/31/12).

From the war on science – complete with AGW, “Audience at tea party debate cheers leaving uninsured to die” (By Rachel Rose Hartman | The Ticket; news.yahoo.com, 9/13/11).

  4. Plenty of these projects appearing in Spain. Also on large factory and warehouse roofs.

  5. This is an idea whose time has come. There is a bright future. Those of us who are wise will take it. It would have been better if it had been adopted years ago. Rooftop and carport solar make so much sense because it is distributed energy, locally sourced, and requires no grid. It also can strengthen the grid if inter tied. If EVs are connected, say at work during the day, it can provide backup power to the grid, increasing its value. Owners can get payback both for solar and for utility back up during peak afternoon hours. Peak electricity has the highest rates, thus the highest payback.
