Unwinding “Hide the Decline”

April 28, 2011

After more than 6 weeks of research and mucking through skull-exploding, mind numbing distortions, contortions, and misrepresentations of this story, I’ve finally finished my video on that most toxic meme  that came out of the enormous nothing-burger called  “climate-gate”  — the phrase “hide the decline”.

Like Obama’s birth certificate, the truth will never make a dent on the committed crazies of climate denial, but I think this is worth watching for citizens, bloggers, or researchers who are trying to get their arms around the story, and appreciate how much the media helped, or hurt, understanding of the issue.

Working on this, plus keeping up with the Fukushima story, has been a huge time sink, but I hope now to get back to more regular video releases.

    One of your best.

It really does put this issue to bed – and then some!

    Great work.

One of the best. I was trying to unpack the climategate issue for some colleagues the other day, and you explained it much better than I could.

Honestly, this video makes me wonder if Muller actually planted himself as a “skeptic” in order to be able to have them take a solid look at his methods, approve them, and then have to deal with the results.

  4. […] in case you didn’t get enough of this in Episode 19, here is Peter Sinclair’s excellent take on Muller’s hide the decline […]

    Superb. Thanks, Peter.

How satisfying to see David Koch’s money being used to produce results that confirm the science.

I wonder if Watts has now recanted his denial of reality as a result of the Berkeley study? Of course not. He’s now desperately back-peddling, calling the BEST study “post normal science political theater”. Looks like Anthony Watts and integrity will remain forever strangers!

P.S. Congrats on pronouncing ‘Koch’ correctly – I doubt I could manage it. 😉

Doubtless the hoards of angry zombies will attack his email and educate Dr Muller about his Kock-up.

Did I just hear Sean Hannity accuse climate scientists of adding in the real temps to hide the decline in temperatures?

    Is that what I heard?

    Good detective work. Congrats.

BTW, did anyone notice John Christy sitting beside (to our right) Richard Muller starting at 15:01 and again at 15:26? Surprisingly, I did not see any emotional display on Christy’s face when Muller contradicts material published by Anthony Watts. Is Christy separating himself from the denier-camp of Roy Spencer and others? If so, then there is hope that humanity can get on top of this problem.

Winston Churchill once said “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.” I hope that moment will be 2011.

It strikes me that this is a very incomplete discussion of the issues involved and will satisfy only those who do not have sufficient curiosity to explore the issue for themselves. It is unfortunate that there is much misinformation circulating about climategate that makes it easy to point out misrepresentations. Spend some time at Steve McIntyres website if you are interested in at least reviewing the other side of the story.
